    Solar Access

Hi All, I have to provide evidence of min. 3 hours of sun light on a particular day of the year to an apartment building and I was wondering what would be the best way to do so? I am using VW Architect 2019 and Helidon tool for shadows.

    Student License Extension Request

Hi, I also have the same problem, I applied for the extension of a student license last week and as it's already the end of the second one, I'm wondering if I need to wait longer or something went wrong? Firstly there was an information that I got an extension but now there's "waiting status" and redownloaded version is still asking to validate the license. My account is registered on the same e-mail address as this one. Thank you for any help!

CL - B type link bars

What is the trick to get all of these to connect? It seems to auto rotate the truss segments, not allowing me to connect while rotated. Is there a sweet spot to overlay the forkend connectors?

    lighting for interior rooms

Agreed on all the above. The thing about lighting and glow textures is that you simply have to dig in and experiment. Everything impacts everything else. Brightness, color, location, rendering styles, ambient light, number of reflections, camera effects, the texture onto which light is projecting, etc. I used to wonder why, in the credits of an animated movie, that they listed personnel for “lighting”. Typically a lot of personnel. I don’t wonder that anymore.

    macOS Mojave (10.14) Compatibility

Hi BenG One of my friends is Inventor and designer and he loves Vectorworks. For him Vectorworks has the perfect mix from 3d functionality and simplicity. Incidentally, Nemetschek has never said that Vectorworks is only developed further for architecture or landscape. And f.ex. it is precisely in Spotlight that Vectorworks is the world leader. Back to your shoe horn: For the back part you need from my point of view less than one minute: - 2 extrudes with different radius - 1 hemisphere - 1 Shell Solid - 1 Chamfer Edge For the front part you have two different objects: - One object as counterpart to the back part (modeling like the back part) - The horn For the horn you can use the CSG Modeling System, NURBS or Subdivision. If you don't have experience with NURBS and Subdivisions your should first watch a webinar or some Youtube-Videos. In my simplified-test I used CSG with a Extrude along Path. Best regards, Marc

Position Summary / Minimum Circuits needed

This doesn't work - the report says "No circuits are needed, are dimmers assigned to your lights?" - I don't want to assign dimmers- Our space is basically dimmer per circuit - I want to M.E. assign dimmers based on how many are needed for each position.

@Mark Aceto Mark, That would be easy enough if I didn't have 29 years of MiniCAD/VW files.

If you will ultimately be rendering with Renderworks, consider trying out making a texture resource that uses Glow for the Reflectivity shader, and apply that to the shade/glass of the lamp. You can control the brightness of the Glow effect in the shader controls. Then, to see the glow effect you have to render in Renderworks render modes with the Lighting Options using a choice other than None. The glow effect is produced by the indirect lighting engine. This technique is probably the best for producing soft lighting from non-point lit surfaces.

    Musical instrument / backline symbols

@scottmoore Hey Scott, one item for clean up I noticed. In the 2D component of your 5' Grand Piano (Glossy & Matte) symbols, there are 900 polygons that can be removed from the curved portion of the frame.

Yes - but haven't had proper time to dig in yet. It's on the radar though. Just.need.to.clone.myself.

HA >>our office is planning to change to one of the big and really reliable cad software houses If it were only as easy as that. I tried switching and spent months with Solidworks and some days with Rhino and found that especially SW was more buggy and unreliable than VW with all sorts of limitations and tools that did not work. I agree that VW could do a lot better and offer more in the annual upgrades… I can't remember when there was a "must have" tool or release, but regrettably, I have not found something better. D

    lighting for interior rooms

Without seeing the shape of it I would guess Spotlights. If they are truly down lights, then spots would be right - you can adjust the beam angle to make it more focused and narrow, or open up wider to give you more coverage. Omni light is like an exposed lightbulb (without the socket) - so a ball of light emitting in all directions. So if you had just exposed bulbs, this is the way to go. Directional light is about parallel beams of light - think sunlight here - so not a cone of light but a even direction of light rays. (Technically, the sun is hitting us in a cone shape, but it is so large and so far away, that to human eyes, the rays appear to be parallel.) For level - you just have to try it out and see what feels right. e.

With all due respect to VW, you might wanna check out Rhino for this type modeling

    Template page creation

Hi Christian. Slightly tricky question. Does the layout have any viewports? You can’t make viewports into symbols. But also if you make it as a template you can’t easily import that sheet layer into another file. The import function will not bring in sheet layer content - just the sheet layer itself. I think the intention with drawing templates is to have not only content but drawing organisation all set up complete with class, design, layers, sheet layers viewports, tool settings etc etc if you just need the content then probably easier to make it a symbol sans any viewports. You would then have to create the viewports each time. another option might be to make the front page a custom title block. This is how we do it. That way you can update all the project info along with the other title blocks in the file.

Callouts with Multiple Leader Lines - Line Thickness Issue

The problem also seems to disappear if I create a completely brand new callout with multiple leaders lines (even in a converted 2018 --> 2019 file). But the original callout created from a previous version still has the line weight problem even if I delete a leader line and then recreate it 🤷‍♀️. Kind of funny how that is.

Callouts with Multiple Leader Lines - Line Thickness Issue

Hi @ASagatovVW, The file was originally created with version 2018 and then was converted to 2019. I guess that's the problem..... I opened a brand new 2019 file w/ new callouts and the issue didn't appear.

Callouts with Multiple Leader Lines - Line Thickness Issue

@loretta.at.large Hello, I just tested this and had one of our techs test it, and it doesn't seem to be occurring on either of our machines. Do you know if this is occurring with callouts you generated in 2019 or is it possibly coming from an older version (if so, do you possibly know which version)? Are you able tor replicate this with new callouts in new files on your end?

    1) I my own tools and have never had need for a "flat" tool. 2) 3 words: "Return On Investment." ;-)

Imported DWG files very slow in vw

I’m not sure if it is one of the glitches you mention, but in the provided screenshot, it looks like a bunch of stuff is crammed up in the top/left of the import. Any chance you could direct message me a copy of the DWG in question so I can dig into it?
