2022 - Wall Component Modeling

I was excited to try out the the wall component enhancements.  I could get neither the new wrapping functions to work - and when I tried to push pull components as shown in the video - the wall converted to a generic solid - same behavior as today.

Does this only work with special walls?

 

Is there a tutorial?

Did you use the ungroup function first? They mentioned that in the video I think. Can't test now.

Been trying for over an hour and re-reading the help file.  No matter what I do I cannot get this work.  Like Fabrica the preview image in wall closure dialog shows correctly but the closures aren't showing in the model.   Also I notice if I select a window or door the Wall Closure option is greyed out in OIP.

Was really hoping this would be a feature that worked as I use 3d models for images all the time and the lack of wrapping really ruined the look of the models.

If anyone can get this work could they post an example file for us to download and look at the settings.

Right.  The video is showing how you can now in group a wall to get at its 3D geometry.

First thing to note is this replaces the old plan view only component wrapping functionality.

 

To enable the new Functionality:

• Right click on the Door or Window object and and select Plug-in Object Options.
• Then check mark the Use wall closure option.  This will enable the Wall Closure option on the OIP.  
• (Note that there is a Wall Closure Profile Offsets button in this dialog as well.)

You will now be able to access the Wall Closure functionality on the OIP.

 

  

 

 

 

The Wall Closure functionality can be defined by the Object or by the Wall Style.  There are separate tabs for Profile and Wrapping.

 

 

 

 

Defining them by the Wall Style is very similar.

In order to get closures to work, the Door or Window must have the “Use wall closures” option selected in its Plug-in Object Options.  You can get to the Plug-in Options via right-clicking on a plug-in or plug-in style (in the Resource Manager) and choosing Edit Plug-in Options.  This setting is off by default for now mainly due to some performance issues that we’re currently working to improve.  After this and some other possible tweaks are done, the “Use wall closure” option will likely be turned on by default.

Ahh, I have been trying this for hours. I did everything in the posts above and I still cannot get it to work. The preview shows the wall closures but the model doesn't. What am I missing?

I think it has to do with the number of Interior and/or External Wall Detail Component wraps in the Window Settings itself. Although when I tried it filled the window in completly with blockwork.

I'm sure we'll dial it in soon ... keep going at it!

Can the closure/wrappings be defined by object style as well as by wall style - or is it individually set per object instance?

Update: looks like 2021 files converted to 2022 don't do it - needs to be new drawing in 2022 to work.

Not a wall configuration I would use - but it happened to be the first I tested...  I could see how on a normal simple wrap this could be helpful, but as @Matt Panzeradmitted this is not a finished feature...

Here  - even on the simplest possible settings -  the feature does not understand where the window is and seems to be guessing about where to stop the wrapping.

Not exactly fair to say.

You will get odd results if the profile shape extends past the face of jamb.  More realistic values should work.

If you use the "Wrap To Insert" option for a component, it should stop when it hits the jamb.

Can you attach the file and explain what you want this to look like?

Currently, this only works for Door and Window Plug-ins.

However, symbol support for this is on the radar.

This should not be the case.

Can you send me a simple file from 2021 that does not work?

My first challenge to this feature would be to see how accurately it could represent either of, for example, these quite conventional jamb details:

 

 

The thing is that it's maybe a bit academic whilst the window tool itself remains so embarrassingly primitive. Maybe the Windoor tool will mean that we can start to draw stuff that looks even half convincing at say 1:50 scale?

Only the related settings in the Plug-in Object Options can be part of the plug-in object style.  The other settings are more related to the wall structure and must be controlled at the wall or individual insert level.

Thanks. I imagine it must be very complicated to work out the best way to control all these multiple variables and you have my sympathies/admiration if you were one of the people who has had to try and programme this!

This first wall reengineering task was a huge undertaking.  While I did not implement any of this myself, I understand enough of how it was done and what's happening behind the scenes is quite impressive!  The Vectorworks Architecture Features team of engineers all tackled this together.  Kudos to them all!  🎉

This is exactly what I wanted.  I see now that with some setting work - I can likely get close to what I would want.   Thanks Matt!

I think this might belong in the grand BIM debate rather than the 2022 - but personally I believe that type of detail should not be modeled.  That is a great 2D detail and any tool that contains enough settings to achieve that will be too cumbersome to use.  I am now (after I understand the tool a little better) excited that assemblies and there for renderings will be more accurate - but also still diagrammatic.  Let details be details.
