How to create angles with a lean?

This forum is becoming a place of despair instead of innovation.

It is much easier to enjoy and work in VW when you haven't had

any other 3D or CAD App's experience .....

I really would develop the design on paper or cardboard model sketches first.

Bring these into VW as an underlay, check dimensions and somehow hack

them in as geometry.

Maybe working with 3D Polygon Triangles, adapted one at a time and maybe

converted to a Nurbs Surface or such if there is no other way to extrude or

thicken these.

jack of all trades, but the master of none.

So true.

But that gets more tedious over time.

I think I should get rid of at least all my redundant double

CAD and 3D Apps I take care of.

(and/or operating systems and machines)

From time to time a followed a few Blender Tutorials but it

was new for me each time again.

Going into Blender and just searching  through the UI for a

specific task and being successful was far more rewarding

today.

Ouch,

I meanwhile had a pretty idealized imagination of VW's Toolset.

Now that I started playing a bit,

I constantly ran into all these VW caveats - can't use such object with this tool,

refuse to convert 2D Polygons to generic Solid, can't delete or weld Vertices

in VW SubD, .....

I feel like a complete noob.

Laughing not at, but with. You have encapsulated all my feels about SubD.

I think the 3D Gizmo ist still the best VW has.

It is the Quad Mesh only purpose, constantly switching in the option bar

and some missing basic Mesh functions (vertex welding, ...) that does

not make fit VW SubD that well in this special case.

Yes, Edit Subdivision, Add Edge.

if the object has thickened, you’ll have to add an edge for each face, typically.

I think i get that bit, it's how you then fold it - do you group-select a bunch of faces and do some kind of rotate action around the edge that's on the inside of the fold....but then what happens to the edge on the outside of the fold?

grab the vertices you want to reposition and use the 3D dragger to get them positioned.  All the connected faces and edges vine along for the ride.

Vectorworks (as far as I know) doesn't really do true meshes, where you can move a vertex and pull all of the adjacent faces.

Many others have claimed this in the past. I think working with meshes is not always stressed in training or self learning. Reshape tool is the “go to”, but does not produce the desired result. Gotta marquee vertices with the Select tool.

For thickness I would shell individual faces. Or one could shell for the face material then create a working plane and draw & extrude polys representing the lumber elements. Then model the hinges and bent nail connectors, etc. As @line-weight points out this would best be driven by intended construction and materials. Flats joined by hinges are common, some with face material on both sides.  Visible joints can have a fabric cover. All depends on scene change, crew skill, etc.

Others with more experience may critique all that and jump in with techniques for viewports with dimensioned shop schedule.

Did someone claim that wasn’t possible?

Me !

I did exactly the same as @Benson Shaw

3D Polys, convert to Mesh.

But I was unable to select any vertices by my selection Tool Marquee.

Switched through all UIOP Modes without success.

Therefore tried Reshape Tool, which also did not work.

(Could be that I did already draw the 3D Polys in 3D Space,

not just flat on the ground - or vice versa)

Will try again

HI Benson

Nice tutorial.  Good point on the value of Mesh in Vectorworks, it was the go to method even in MiniCad.

I still sometimes use this.  When I have my shape, I make sure there is no fill color assigned to the mesh, then I convert to NURBS, Add Solids and shell.  If there is a fill color, the fill will produce a different shape which can be useful, but hard to control.

I usually use pre-positioned 3D loci to snag the edges to.  A simple but effective tool.  KIS, keep it simple.

HI Suz,

The reason I am advocating the easiest method is because it takes you to the method below..  Once you are comfortable moving around 3D points and connecting them with 3D polys, then the method shown below becomes easier.

You could build almost anything using the method below.

Hi yes!! I'm gonna try this - cos with other methods I couldn't get the size/angles accurate (they are just random angles and shapes at the moment, but when it comes to do the drawings I will need to unify angles etc). I will be sharing results this week  (doing 10 installations :O ) ! Thanks so much!!!
