Would love to see a use case. I’m all about building the Mise en Place in my custom library.

Ok here's a couple:

Shaker drawer fronts in straight HL:

Using the 2D component I can rationalise the lines a bit + get a cleaner/simpler look:

Likewise a bath:

How HL depicts it:

How I want it to look:

Well, maybe let it be enabled/disabled. But it's not a legacy feature - it's a feature that's required for current workflows to work.

Nobody is advocating that the feature go away.  We just want to get it out of our way.  Let me hide it or doc it.  Every time I edit a symbol I have to move that damn palette.  It is easier to move between 3D symbol editing and 2D symbol editing than it is to move the stupid component edit palette out of the way every time,  sometimes more than once in a symbol editing session.  Why can't I hide it or dock it?  If you need it, you get to have it.  If you don't need it, it gets to slap you across the face every time you edit a symbol.  I did have this discussion with some of VW at the LDI trade show.  What I took away from the discussion was that they don't care; they have other fish to fry.

I use the pallet often, I use it to customise the 2d components of a front view of a lighting device. Then I can specify different 2d appearances in section viewports which for lightplots is pretty useful.

" I use this palette often, but always have to move it about."

There is a current feature request for palates and windows to be pixel aware, improving the graphical appearance of the UI and also negating the need for users to constantly have to move palates and windows.

To say we don't care is simply untrue, in terms of the product and the UX we care a great deal.

What is a long term issue is: VW not understanding the workflow ramifications of the additions / changes / features.

As far as the Component Edit palette goes, the title of this thread is apropos  - We have been forced to find alternates to the workflow because of it.

I think what Sam was relaying is that it’s a low priority to fix. Seems like pretty low hanging fruit to add an X to close the palette (and add the palette name to the menu). Also frustrating that there isn’t a UI guidelines QA that says “all palettes must have an X and menu… “

It’s this type of friction we encounter all day every day for years on end that drives us crazy and gives us bad attitudes. We need a Snow Leopard release to remove all these little pain points (not new icons).

These look gorgeous. I could see doing this for scenic elements (entertainment users). What’s the overall VP render mode for each?

The render mode is Hidden Line - in fact it has to be HL in order for the 2D component to display.

e.g.

The pelmet under the wall units, the cupboard handles + electrical outlets all have 2D components too. The dishwasher should have one, then I wouldn't have to look at the awful triangulation where the handle is (that's 3D warehouse for you...)

so, this doesn't make sense. The users are asking for two things; the ability to open and close the palette, and an improvements to all the palettes. We should not have to wait for both to happen at the same time. I am sure we have been asking for the ability to close this palette since it was introduced. Docking would be sweet. We have been asking for increased fonts size in palettes for years, so we got new icons. Looking at Rhino or Blender (not sure which) I find an interactive slider for font size in palettes. To be clear, I open the dialog, move the slider and the palettes react immediately, while in the prefs window, Find what I like and close.
