  1. I like that your client, a Pharmacist, can afford to develop a quality building, and supports good Architecture. Good work. Here attached a pharmacy in my home town for comparison;

It looks like a bug; with nothing selected, change the default fill to a solid colour create a new class, you'll see the solid colour defaults to the fill of the new class tick use at creation change fill style to none click OK draw a rectangle, change it's class to the the new class you created, and as expected, the fill will be none in the attribute pallet, change the fill style to solid, and it will change to the colour you set as default - this is to be expected. Bug one - the OIP will show the fill colour as "by class" (ie the arrow in the colour box), yet you have not set a fill colour by class. Not a big deal really. Bug two - with nothing selected, change the fill colour default to something else. now set your rectangle to "make all attributes by class" (the 3 lines beside the question mark on the OIP). now change the fill style to solid, and it won't chose the new default colour, rather the previous colour you selected in step 1. You can open the Organization pallet and change the fill to solid, select a new colour, then change the fill back to none, exit the pallet and your items on that class will change to the newest colour, even though use at creation is on, and fill style is set to none. You might wonder how I've had the time to answer this question, and it is because I'm waiting for that dog software Revit to print a set of drawings to PDF. Mat
  3. It seems to work when you first create a symbol, but once you start adding items (maybe a nested symbol), it fails.

  5. You could try creating a texture with a displacement map - you'll need to render in Final Quality Renderworks to see it. Here's a teaser - I spent 5 minutes on this. One render is OpenGL / shaded, the other I've applied the texture to the wall, and Final Quality
  6. Hi KenH I got to here then gave up. My next step would be "convert to 3d polys", then manually draw to top arrangement. Then create a symbol so it will insert correctly into the wall. Convert to 3d polys generated a lot of items, so maybe just draw the elevation manually using polygons, then extrude. Then make a symbol. These workaround methods won't show a window on a default worksheet, so you'll have to workaround that to if you use the schedules. HTH, Mat

  9. Maybe I shouldn't have refereed to force-quitting as crashing. Perhaps if I'd waited long enough the hidden line render would have completed.
  10. My model featured many curves (the steel sections are curved in plan), so maybe that caused rendering delays.
  11. I didn't think so - only one design layer. File size 39MB. I built the model using symbols, mirrored, rotated, etc.Here's the open GL rendering of the section I was trying to render hidden line. I've basically given up on hidden line rendering, it was just a mistake to choose the wrong option when I created the viewport.
  12. Force Quit 3 times yesterday, using Creat Section Viewport with hidden line rendering. Hadn’t crashed at all in the last week. I find the latest update to be for more stable than earlier updates.

  15. Hi All - I need some help with Worksheets and Record Formats please; I have a file with 2 design layers; "Model", and "Parts List". I have built the model using custom symbols, all of which have a record attached. On the design layer "Parts List" I have a worksheet to list all the part names (a record attached to each symbol), and also a single instance of each symbol. When I use the =COUNT function in the worksheet, it sums all the symbols with the same part name in the drawing, ie all on the Model layer, plus the additional symbol on the Parts List layer. So I need a worksheet calculation =COUNT-1 but this doesn't work for a database worksheet. Or I need to include only the instances on the Model layer in the =COUNT, but I can't get this to work either. Or I need a new spreadsheet worksheet that takes the data from the =COUNT column of the database worksheet, and subtracts 1, but I can't get this to work. I could workaround by deleting the extra symbols on the Parts List layer, but I want to avoid this if possible. Or maybe a design layer reference to a new file, etc, etc. There are workarounds I could try. But =COUNT-1 is my preferred approach. Any ideas please? PFA. Thanks in advance, Mat.
  16. Hi All I'm have unusual slowness on my MBP using VWA2021 NZ/Aus version. The MacBook is 2019, full spec. It should be good. Both OS X and VWA are up to date. I can't pin point when the problem occurs, but attached video shot from my phone shows an example. I've tried toggling the various options under "display preferences", but no improvement.   17. Hi All I am trying to share the resources and favorites between two licenses of VW, using windows server 2003 PC to host the VW_USER_DATA folder. I set the "User Data and Preferences Folder" to the server location on each copy of Vectorworks, and it appears to work as expected. However, most times when I launch VW, it requires activation over the Internet before it will proceed. When I pointed the second computer to the server location, VW asked if I wanted to copy the entire contents to the new location, and I declined. So I suspect some license information didn't get copied over. Can anyone enlighten me on a fix for this. Thanks in advance. Mat Caird
  18. Hi All I'm trying to work out how to stop VW overwriting the textures I have applied in C4D every time I update the geometry in VW. Dave's earlier post stated "If you change a material in RW then merge to C4D the C4D version takes precedence so it doesn't change" yet this is not what happens on my system. The VW/RW materials overwrite the C4d materials every time. How to stop this happening please, otherwise, the $2000 I spent on C4D has been a waste... Thanks all. Mat

If you change a material in RW then merge to C4D the C4D version takes precedence so it doesn't change, which is probably not what you want. I think the most recent change should take priority, that way if you change something in C4D it would remain, or if you change it in VW it would remain appropriately too." I am not getting this behaviour at all, in fact the opposite? How can I ensure VW materials dont keep overwriting C4D materials in each consecutive "send to C4d" command I run?   20. My method is clunky too , but works like this; Create a unique design layer for each joinery unit. Model the joinery unit in 3d, using a floor object for the benchtops, and extrudes etc for the shelves, cupboard doors, sink insert etc. Crete a new Sheet layer for the joinery unit, and create viewports for each of the construction drawings views, plan, elevation, section 3d, etc. Voila, you now have joinery working drawings completed. You still need to show the unit on the house plan view....in past VW releases, I would create a symbol from my unit, and insert that in the 3d 'model'. You can imagine it's clunky having to edit the symbol, but work well because all the views are updated with each change. I think now I can use design-layer viewports instead of the symbol, which would solve this hassel. You then get to the question of how to edit the shelf unit in the 3d model of the house....and you cant. Sometimes I will copy and paste in place the walls from the house model to the joinery unit design layer to check sizes etc, and this is a fairly easy process. To create the internal elevations, I use the section viewport function, and add notes in the viewport annotation....thus, any changes update through all the drawings. Hope this helps a bit.... Mat
  21. Hi All I have just installed 2010 and notice an annoying change from good ole' 2009.... When editing a text block, previously I could position my cursor in the middle of a word, then double click to select the entire word. This behavior is consistent across all windows apps, except VWA2010. Anyone found a fix for this? Thanks, Mat
  22. have you got renderworks? If yes, make a new texture in renderworks with the color shader set to image color. Load the image. Apply the new texture to the extrude, the adjust the scle and position in the OIP Mat
  23. Well, I tried the various options suggested, and ended up with Carl's idea of using chrome, with the color set to black. I didn't quite do what Carl suggested, but the result looks great to me. Thnaks for all the advice. Mat
  24. Hi All I often use glossy black paint in my designs. However, black is a difficult color to render, so I wonder if any of you have a good trick for this. Usually I use this black color on things like window frames, kitchen kick boards, neither of which have curves to cause specular effects to define the edges. What I usually do is create a dark grey texture, with plastic reflection, but it is never very good. I have tried a dark grey 'clouds' texture, using two shades of grey, and this is Ok for a matt black window frame, but I suspect cloud shaders of increasing render times. What I am trying to render today is a gloss black gate. I will use final quality renderworks, with HDRI lighting, and maybe a point light to brighten the gate itself. Anyone have any tricks for me?
