Drawing 3D polygons in 3D view and extrude
MGuilfoile replied to MGuilfoile's topic in General Discussion
To quote: "Yes. I don't know why you have such claimed difficulties..." If that is not boorish, I don't know what is. I'm leaving this forum and moving my questions to one on Facebook. Going forward, I'll just use this VW site for software information, etc. Don't bother replying, Jeff, I won't see it. -

By the way, Auto Plane is greyed out in my workspace. -
Drawing 3D polygons in 3D view and extrude
MGuilfoile replied to MGuilfoile's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the tip. No, I start with the 3D poly, but it seems like the 2D polys are actually 3D (when you fly around over them they are clearly 3D.) It seems intuitive that a 3D polygon would be the starting point when in a 3D view. When I try to draw a 2D rectangle from an isometric view, it does not draw on the X,Y plane. It draws it in a somewhat random tilt. If you look in plan view, they are crazy non-rectangular polygons. The shapes in the attached image should be aligned. If I extruded these there is no telling where they would go. I think we may be talking about a different thing. By the way, I can't get a 3D polygon to "push-pull." I know how to do it. It just does not work on 3D polys...for me. I don't use it much because it turns it into a generic solid and is no longer editable as an extrude. And, Jeff, I apologize if you think my difficulties are "claimed," implying they are not real. I don't know where you get off with such boorish comments, but I can assure you that I know what I'm doing when it comes to Vectorworks. Perhaps you are just smarter than me and I'm missing something obvious. Please point me to a tutorial where this is explained. -
One of the things I do all the time in FormZ is draw shapes--rectangles, circles, etc.-- on the X,Y plane while in a 3D view, then extruding them in the Z direction while in the same 3D view3. This is very handy in situations when you can only see what you are doing while in a 3D view. I can draw a 2D shape on any 2D plane and extrude in the third dimension. Is there a way to do this in Vectorworks 2024? I have no problem drawing 3D rectangles, but I don't see a way to keep the angles at 90 degrees. It is out of character for a Vectorworks tool to be so free-form. It is also hard to type in the length of the sides that are not snapping to something. Lastly, once created, there is no way to extrude the 3D polygon you have created. The Extrude tool does not work (it should) and the Push-Pull tool only works sporadically (mostly not at all). To be honest, I don't see what the 3D polygon tool is for since "2D" polygons are already 3D. In short, what I want is to be able to draw a 3D rectangle (aka, a polygon with four sides and four 90-degree angles) with one of the rectangle tools without having to snap to anything. I want to do this while in a 3D view isographic or perspective. I then want to extrude it in the dimension in which it was not created. I hope that makes sense. I'm showing two images from a FormZ file to help explain what I'd like to do in Vectorworks. Is it possible? I have not been able to find a tutorial on this. Thanks MH Brown

I noticed that VW 2025 will be out soon and a press release described the new features that merit this major upgrade. I didn't, however, see an inclusion of a way to cancel the Publish command. As everyone knows, the only way to stop the Publish command at present is to Force Quit Vectorworks. That is never a good thing. If a "cancel Publish" is included, please let us know. That would be enough for me to upgrade. If there is no "cancel Publish" I will be very disappointed. Thank you,

Hmmmm...not sure why it isn't working for me either. There are several things that seem to be unique to my installation...and have remained so for several SP upgrades. For example, the texture map Apply to Face mode works less than half the time. It never works on the extruded sides of a polygon. What I mean is, if I draw a hexagon, give it a fil and extrude it, the only faces where the Apply to Face work are the top and bottom hexagons. The six 3D rectangles making up the sides all act as a single face. There are other things that are mostly minor, but a little annoying since it was not this way before the accelerated release dates of the subscription era. I still like the software better than anything else I've tried, especially for the price.

At present, this only works in wireframe which is not helpful because no one renders Viewports in wireframe. There is a box to check to "view objects outside viewport," but it does not do anything--unless you switch your Viewport to "Wireframe" rendering. So, the info box is there. Let's make it work for 2025.

Does anyone know if anyone is working on getting this fixed, either Apple or VW? I'm not sure which company is the problem. I'm using VW on a Windows 10, i9 Intel no-name lap top. It runs two monitors just fine while closed or open. I also have a 2019 MacBook Pro that has the exact same specs as the PC (i9, 32GB RAM, 8GB GPU) and it runs a single monitor just fine...but I have not tried to make it run two. The Mac is on OS14.5. Does anyone know if this configuration is also having problems with two monitors, lag, etc. or has everyone moved on to the Apple Silicon machines? I assume the latter. I usually use the PC since it is provided by the company, but sometimes I need to use the Mac as well, so was wondering if it was a mistake to upgrade to 14.5. The VW on the Mac is my license, btw. Thanks, MHBrown

In Windows, VW2024 SP6 (I think). The key command "Control-E" no longer extrudes a 2D object. I have tested it with circles and rectangles, nothing works. The pull-down menu still works, however, so the tool itself works. Just not the hot key. I tried editing the workspace to reinforce the Control-E as extrude, but it was already in place. All other key commands that I have tried work fine (such as Group and Ungroup.) I tried quitting and reopening VW. I have tried it with a new, blank file. Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas as to how to fix it? Please do not ask me to send my file. It is not my file. Thanks, MHBrown

How to adjust texture maps on doors and windows?
MGuilfoile replied to MGuilfoile's question in Troubleshooting
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely do this. That said, I often need to change the scale of the texture. This is especially true with woodgrains. In short, I really need to be able to manipulate my texture maps. MHBrown -
How to adjust texture maps on doors and windows?
MGuilfoile replied to MGuilfoile's question in Troubleshooting
Really? The texture maps cannot be adjusted. That means I can only attach solid colors to the doors and windows. That is very, very disappointing. I'll have to build my own doors and windows and insert them as symbols, abandoning what is otherwise a reasonably useful tool. Thanks for the quick answer. MHBrown -
VW 2024, Windows 10 So, I can only place texture maps on doors and windows by creating classes with the sole purpose of getting the maps on them. This is despite the fact that the main purpose of classes is to control visibility, which is not the case with this system. That said, I can live with it until the better system arrives, but in the meantime how do I adjust the texture maps on doors and windows. Even changing the way the grain runs (a simple process on a non-window or non-door) has escaped me. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but, for now, I can't do anything except put solid colors on these objects. Can anyone point me in the right direction? How do I manipulate the texture maps on doors and windows? Thanks, MHBrown

In VW2024, latest version on Windows 10. I'm working on a small visitor center. Image 01 shows the symbol in place on the model layer. Image 02 shows the symbol in its Edit window after double-clicking it. Image 03 shows the symbol after Control-5 to get it into Top/Plan view. It rotates to its created position. Image 04 shows what I get for a Front view (hitting "2" on the number pad) while in the Symbol Edit window. It is not the front view of image 03, as it should be. It is, instead, the front view of how it is oriented in the model layer (see image 01). This was not how it was in the past, so I'm wondering what is going wrong. Am I making an incorrect step somewhere. I created this angled wall as a symbol for the specific reason that I wanted to edit it with the main wall in an orthographic position. But it didn't work here. Any ideas where I went wrong? Also, when I am in the Symbol Edit window, I can't use Shaded render or any other RW option. The object disappears. I can only use Hidden Line. So, I can't do texture mapping on symbols while they are symbols. This has been a known problem for awhile and I was wondering if it was going to be fixed since not being able to use texture maps on symbols is a problem for me. Thanks, MHBrown
