VW beginner is stuck

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm trying to make a 3D model like the attachment, my thought was to make a block and then cut it along lines, but I can't seem to find the correct way to do that. Am I at least thinking along the right lines, or is there an easier, proper way?

thank,

Peter

Deform tool would work, Split tool may also be what you're looking for from an isometric view:

I think this is one of the few instances I would use the Multiple Extrude command. It would be the quickest. In Top/Plan draw your base triangle and place a 2d loci at the elevated corner. Select both objects and choose Multiple Extrude from the Model menu. Set the desired height in the dialog that opens.

thanks everybody, in the end the deform method worked easiest for me, but i enjoyed getting to experiment with the other methods as well. Will definitely be using these in the future.

Who knew the split tool also works in 3d.  Vectorworks is so strange.

It's great for 3d work, massive time saver... you can also select mulitple 3d entities and split them all together with one operation.

I think of it as my Industrial Cutting Laser.

I tried to convert a extruded circle to a subdivion object and then move the top.

But VW can not convert it to a subdivision unfortunately.

A: A multiple extrude can do what you ask, but is 'heavy' object in VW.

It can slow down your file.

B: Otherwise you could:

  1. draw te circles (circle tool or shortcut '6')
  2. place them on the correct height (ctrl + alt + M)
  3. convert them to nurbs curves (ctrl + alt + n)
  4. loft them in the first mode (3d modeling toolset)
  5. create planar caps (3d power pack)
  6. stitch and trim surfaces (3d power pack)

C : The deform tool maybe, but i didnt get it to work. I got it too bend, but it did not shear in my quick test.

Attached a simple file with some tests

basically what I'm looking for is to select two points, and that it then draws my cylinder from the first to the second point. Or draw a cylinder (I know the height), and then have the top center and the bottom center go to my points of choice.

After extruding a circle, you can user-adjust position of top or bottom end of cylinder by activating the "ReShape" Tool command.

(highlighted tool in screenshot below)

What about extrude along path.

Draw a line in 3d, then draw the cirlce to the right diameter, and go Model -> Extrude along path.

Double click and edit path to adjust start/end points later.

So many ways in VW, forgot about the EAP 👍

extrude along path sounds promising, I have some issues though. I draw the poly line, then I draw the circle, but I can't select extrude along path. I've never used this, so I'm probably doing something simple wrong.
