  1. In that example, no difference. They are both two completely valid methods you could use to create that shape. Revolve with Rail is designed to have an axis and swing two profile curves around it. Useful for creating circus tents and oddly shaped roof elements and other cap-like objects. Birail sweep can do a lot of what revolve with rail can do, but its a little more free in what kinds of profile curves can be selected and can create long flowing tunnel-like shapes that revolve with rail could not accomplish: To Combine the two NURBS surfaces with matching edges you can normally select both, then use Modify > Compose. Sometimes if the edges aren't exact you can use Add Solids to get a Solid Addition instead.
  2. It looks like it was adressed (at least the cause in the previous case) by SP2 or SP3, are you updated to either of those versions already? If not, go ahead and do so: http://www.vectorworks.net/downloads/ServicePack.php?major=2014&servicepack=3 If so and the problem still happens, send me a file where you see it after printing, please: tech@vectorworks.net
  3. I have seen this exact issue before but I do not recall what the conclusion/resolution was. I will track it down and get back to you.
  4. If that is the case, you may want to look further into why the plotter does not print at a proper orientation. What is the make and model?
  5. Looks like the only reasoning for it being first is that it is alphabetically the first format of the options available in the list. I'll see what can be done about altering that.
  6. I don't know of any by default, but for quick little detail objects, you may be able to find some models on 3Dwarehouse: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/search.html?backendClass=entity&q=pots+and+pans Sometimes the colors/materials will import as well as the geometry, but if not, they can be recolored or retextured relatively easily. It will save you the time of having to model them in 3D from scratch in any case.
  7. For anyone else coming across this, the below video covers the basics of the above post:
  8. At what point in the use of Create Section Viewport process do you encounter difficulty? What are the limiting components? Do you feel this would be best addressed by modifying the way Clip Cube is able to create section viewports to give it this rotated angle ability, or should improvements be made to Create Section Viewport specifically?
  9. In addition to trying the above suggestion, I would recommend installing the latest driver for your graphics card (I think you are currently at 276.19 from the info provided, the driver below is 332.76), then rebooting: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/74061/en-us After that and the preference reset, if you still get the same consistent crashing, contact tech@vectorworks.net and we will get you sorted out.
  10. In the slicing application / gcode generator, you can normally specify a number of perimeters, increasing this may resolve that, as well as increasing the number of solid top layers. Sorry to be so vague, but its very dependent on what software is being used to control the printer.
  11. File > Document Settings > Units, here on the right you can change the rounding precision for angles. You can zero the rotation of most objects in the Object info palette, the field for "Rotation", if it does not have this field, there is no way that I know of to return it to 0 other than manually rotating it. To rotate it about its Z axis, you can use Modify > Rotate > Rotate 3D, where you can specify the center of the rotation and the axis of rotation.
  12. Not that I am aware of, but there needs to be. JPEG2000 is not only very outmoded, it also has very few quality control options, leading many users to think that Image Export isn't a valid option as it is so low quality. Placing a feature request now.
  13. I will preface this post by saying, 1) I am not privy to the direct answers to most of those questions. Especially long term plans involving BIM standards. 2) The view from where I am in the company is limited. I can see clearly any aspects of Tech Support or Customer Service, a good bit into Engineering and QA, but upper management and their plans are pretty much out of my radar range. I will do my best to address the few questions in your post that I am able to. I see and hear a lot of speculation about changes in NAG affecting us (Nemetschek Vectorworks) directly, perhaps because these changes in CEOs and large partnerships are far more publicly announced than others, but the large majority of those changes do not affect us directly on a day to day basis. Our management makes decisions of their own accord, with very little specific instruction on policy from above. Our financial performance has been solid-to-excellent for the last few years and I have never seen evidence that we are being shoved or pulled in a specific direction because of anything Allplan does. Mostly NAG seem pleased with how well VSS is going and our growth. As far as picking only IFC goes, on average internal talks here seem to favor adopting as many standards as possible to increase the flexibility of the application. Most of the decisions made on what goes in to Vectorworks itself tilt to the side of inclusion and diversity, giving users many options and multiple ways of accomplishing the same goal. Again, these are all my personal observations, NOT direct statements from the company or official standings, and I apologize for being so vague. I am not a part of the meetings that determine our course and speed on a grand scale, much of my work is VERY specialized. It isn't that I don't care about what happens, just that I can only affect the area immediately around me.
  14. If your serial number starts with an E7X, C7X or a B7X there wont be any licensing problems, those are all multi OS licenses. (Older licenses around the Vectorworks 12.5 era were Mac or Win only.) The file format is the same for Mac and Windows, the files can be opened interchangeably.
  15. Not directly, that I am aware of. However the main reason I do not think this is possible currently is because I see an active request for exactly this ability for the next release.
  16. I checked and apparently this issue stems from the SpaceNavigator having different control inputs on Os X, depending upon which version of OS X the user is running. For instance, OS X 10.7, 10.8 and 10.8 all receive different commands from the 3DConnexion devices by default, even though the mapping options remain the same. I will see if anything can be done to change how Vectorworks maps these inputs by default based on which OS the user is on to prevent the need for these manual tweaks.
  17. Check in a new file too, just in case. If the same thing happens in a new file, I have had similar (but not exact) issues with replaced characters on OS X be corrected via these steps: http://kbase.vectorworks.net/questions/793/Font+Book+Validation+%28Mac%29 If the same thing doesn't happen in a new file, email one of the affected ones to me and we can take a closer look.
  18. I have the power! Muahahahaha! (Sadly, purple was unavailable.) Benson: Yep, looks like its using the fill color for the edges of those NURBS with the higher degree setting, I'll add this to the report, thank you.
  19. Confirmed, a few basics shapes exported to STL in both Binary and ASCII, the Binary ones averaged 1/6th of the size of the ASCII versions. I will amend the article to detail this.
  20. Apologies, the boards weren't set to allow .STL files as attachments. I have corrected this and you should be able to attach them in the future.
  21. According to our tracking system, at least 20! Probably more than that though, often the bug's origin doesn't carry over in the case as it moves through.
  22. Confirmed here as well, same effect in all rendering modes. Submitting it now, thank you.
  23. For others that may come across this: http://kbase.vectorworks.net/questions/1124/Improving+STL+File+Export
  24. If you can send me that STL I can see where the problem lies specifically. tech@vectorworks.net There are some shapes that export to STL improperly for 3D printing still, but I have actually made a few similar shapes to that in VW that 3D printed just fine. You may also find this useful: http://kbase.vectorworks.net/questions/1124/Improving+STL+File+Export
  25. Send the file you're working with (before performing the operation) at tech@vectorworks.net and I can have a look. Certain kinds of objects can not be clipped/subtracted.
