Batch re-number sheet layers

Recommended Posts

That's only useful for applying prefixes or suffixes or replacing text. It doesn't re-number or do any actual sequencing.

For example if you're wanting to renumber a range of sheets in order to insert a new sheet into the list, that's currently NOT possible except to do it manually. (It's oft been wished for on here though.)

But it you wanted to change 1, 2, 3, 4 to 101, 102, 103, 104, that's possible with Batch Rename.

I've been using this to renumber sheet layers.  Almost every day.

The first and last numbers are the "stacking" numbers.  So you can start renumbering anywhere in the stack.

It might complain if the operation will try to create a Sheet Number that already exists.  If you suspect that might happen run it with a prefix or suffix that you're not using.  Then run it again. It will remember all the settings.  Just change the dummy prefix or suffix and run it again.

If that doesn't make sense let me know and I'll describe it better.

It’s also very useful for deleting portions of a name, like vectorworks default SHT-# format, leaving the number intact.

Without @Neves+Creative Inc. explaining what they want to do, the tool should not be so easily dismissed.

I have created a bunch of sheet layers say I number them 1 thru 10 and now I have to make another sheet that relates to sheet 3 and instead of it being sheet 11 I want it to be sheet 4 and all other sheets to be subsequently RE numbered in sequence

I think in the first place it would be nice if we could just enter our

office standard for Sheet names, with Prefixes and Suffixes.

Sure, the folders could keep track of the office standard prefixes and sheet numbers, when you add a sheet to the folder, it uses the office standards to name the sheet.

@michaelk

Hello Michael,

Many greetings and a great plugin. I love it.

I don't know why this is not a standard plugin in VW!!!

May I introduce your plugin in the German forum?

I think there are many overseas customers who need such a feature.

I refer to you as the author.

and will write a small how-to (installation, integration in menu, …)

Greetings from Germany

Tobi

Hi Michael,

and thanks for the opportunity for our users here. ❤️

/ / /

I installed the plugin into my Plugin-Ins folder

in the main application folder, and integrated the

plugin into my menu with the workspace-editor.

Is that the way you recommend?

… or can it be done faster, maybe with the Plug-In-Manager?

by-the-way:

I always have to use Deepl to translate my weird English into a better format.

Greetings and many thanks for your help

Tobi

I always put it in ~/Library/Application Support/Vectorworks/2024/Plug-ins.

Then the Plug-in Manager.  Correct!

Even now - long after high school - you could wake me from a dead sleep at 3:00 am and I could instantly list all the accusative and dative German prepositions.  But the genders of all the nouns are gone from my brain!

Please feel free to pass along anything else you like here.
