  1. If you make the text a symbol, modifying the symbol definition will change the text on all the sheets. Will that work for your needs?
  2. Note that there may be multiple viewports that reference the same design layer, and the crops are probably only relevant for a particular view. So you would probably want some sort of control over what crops were visible at any given time. Note that just because I work for NNA, my response is no guarantee this will be added (although I agree it's a useful idea, and it has been mentioned elsewhere).
  3. What you should probably look into is some sort of Revision Control System. Then you could check your standards files into that RCS, and each person would periodically synchronize locally on the latest rewvision of the standards. RCSes are a good idea in general, given that the time to handle lost data is usually rather more than the cost of revision control, and you can just do one backup (of the RCS data) for a whole group of people.
  4. In general, if you get an unexpectedly quits-type message, your best bet is to contact tech support.

Well if you do beware because you lose all your VW files! Surely this has got to be fixed otherwise you can never do a system restore. The only way round it is to store the files in My Documents but I donot want to do that as it places them apart from the rest of the project files. From the sound of it, this has nothing to do with VectorWorks itself. Apparently System Restore is wiping out whatever directory you're storing your files in. However, the proper place to store user files (including VectorWorks files) is My Documents. If you want to separate certain classes of files, make folders within the My Documents folder and place the files you want to keep distinct into separate folders.
  6. quote: Originally posted by ErichR: When you hide hidden lines, why not delete the hidden lines??? If you don't want to see them why save them? The lines are deleted, the many objects you see are polygons. The hidden line code trims the lines, not the polygons, so it never computes what polygons are visible, partially visible, or completely hidden. To reduce the number of polygons to only those visible, and to remove their invisible parts, would require writing a completely new rendering algorithm to do so, and it probably would be intolerably slow.
  7. You could create a layer link to the other layer. The layer link should allow you to do all the alignment you need.
  8. You can do this pref toggling in a single line: SetPref(9, NOT GetPref(9)); You don't even need the Procedure/Begin/End/run stuff. You can easily make a script and assign it to a menu command, and then assign a keyboard shortcut to that command. Choose the menu command Organize->Scripts->VectorScript Plug-In Editor..., select "New..." from that dialog and make a new command, then after clicking OK select Script... and enter the script above. It'll be available in the Workspace Editor for adding to your workspace (look under Miscellaneous.)
  9. NNA generally recommends you turn title blocks into symbols, and insert the symbol directly onto the sheet layer. Alternatively, make a viewport just of your titleblock layer and put that behind your other viewports.
  10. Sheet layers do not have their own set of class settings. If you want specific class settings for a sheet layer, set up a saved view with those class visibilities. If you want all classes visible on all sheet layers, I'd recommend creating a single saved view that just sets all classes to visible, and select that saved view whenever you go from a design layer to a sheet layer.

The folks at NNA are aware, however, of the importance of sections, including live ones. (Adam Osbourne managed to kill his company, Osbourne Computers, by declaring in an interview how much better the next version of his company's portable was going to be. Sales of the current version plummeted, and the company went bankrupt before that next version was ever produced.)
  12. Have you tried contacting tech support via phone or e-mail? The problem you describe isn't well-suited for solving in this forum.
  13. Preferences->VectorWorks Preferences... Select the Display tab, and select the radio button under "Display Light Objects" to be "Only In Wireframe" or "Never".
  14. quote: Originally posted by Sofia Ames: So I guess, I have 2 main choices: 1) I would do the 3d bit in VW and then export it to something else to render it (Renderworks, Strata..etc.) Note that RenderWorks is not a separate program, it plugs into VectorWorks so you just get additional rendering options in the render list and additional resources for textures, image props, and the like.
  15. quote: Originally posted by propstuff: About 30% of the time the Esc key will not abort a render no matter how long you hold it down. [/QB] Was this with a particular rendering mode (RenderWorks, hidden line) or more than one?
  16. You can "embed" an image without any help from NNA. Just find a free host to put it on, then wrap the URL in IMG tags. For example, the code for the image below is: code: [/code][/indent] (Posts with inappropriate images would get deleted by the moderator -- I wonder if this counts?) 17. Escape on both platforms, and command-(period) on the Mac, can interrupt renderings. Sometimes VectorWorks gets so deep in thought while rendering that you need to hold down the key for a bit to make sure it gets the message...
  18. You could convert the solid to NURBS and texture each surface individually. If you want some surfaces to have the same texture, add them together and texture that solid.

  20. quote: Originally posted by AndyM: I am having this problem now. I had 5 sheets each with 2 viewports. I made extensive edits to the design layers including adding classes. I went back to update the viewports and every one of them is gone on every sheet. They are not "out in space" if I do a select all on the sheet it selects nothing. I am reluctant to set them all up again now when I can do basically the same thing with saved sheets but I WANT the viewports to work again. Can someone from NNA please comment on this? Please. Could the viewports be in classes you have set to be not visible?
  21. Do you have access to VW11 to see if this still occurs? You can send problem files to bugsubmit@nemetschek.net or (in this case) to me at the address below.
  22. Also, if you do "Help->About VectorWorks...", what shows up under the list of licensed products?
  23. quote: Originally posted by CipesDesign: The 1.8 dual w/ 20"Cinema Display is a great setup. I use it every day. It is reliable, powerful, fast, quiet and expandable. What more could you want? The 2.5 dual with a 23" or 30" display? For the mentioned $3200 budget, though, the original purchaser might consider getting 2 20" iMacs, and selling one of their old G4s. The G4 -> G5 improvement is quite significant for some operations, such as solid operations.
  24. The easiest way is probably to make the circle as an oval, and extrude between the two. Alternatively, if you need a smooth surface, convert the objects to nurbs, move the one you want on top up in Z by the 1/4", and use the loft tool to create the surface.
  25. If you're not doing RenderWorks, you will rarely notice the performance difference with the second processor, especially if you are only running VectorWorks and not switching between it and other applications a lot.
