Peter Telleman
Hi everyone, this is probably the easiest question, but I'm struggling to find a solution. I have a drawing a colleague made, and in the inventory I see certain symbols that I can't see in the drawing. Is there an easy way to locate where these symbols are in the drawing? Thanks a lot, Peter Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
You could run a report which searches for symbols in the file + have a column for symbolname, then right-click on the rows one by one + click on 'Select Item' to be taken to the object in the drawing...? Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
Or depending on the context, you could also set up a Data Vis to highlight the symbols in question in the drawing. Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
In addition...it is quick and easy to set up a 'custom selection' item that immediately will select and highlight all the symbols on any design layer. I use this a lot. When setting it up you would benefit by making a s script from the criteria to use later on... Tom, I know you know all this but I am attaching some screenshots for Peter's benefit 🙂 3 Quote Link to comment
Elite Exhibits
@Peter Telleman take a look in these two thread When there are so many anomalies and aggravations, VW amazes me when it is able to "take you to right where it is" when you right click a Symbol from a Database Worksheet list ! (Please don't change that feature ...) Peter 1 Quote Link to comment

Kevin K
Yeah, plus you could even set the 'criteria' to select a specific symbol if necessary. 1 Quote Link to comment

Ultimately I guess it depends on the context - the nature of the model, how many symbols there are, where they are located, what you want to do with them. etc. A Data Vis would be good to see all of the symbols at once, each one in a different colour + at a glance see which ones are located where. A worksheet would be good to see a list of each named symbol, how many of each there were, then be able to go through them individually locating them in the model one by one. A custom selection would be good to quickly select all of a named symbol + see in the OIP how many there were + identify their location in the model via their highlighted status... Hopefully one of the methods fits the bill otherwise we'll have to think of some more 🙂 Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
Uh Tom.....don't over think it!!! 🙂 Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
What is a bit odd...is that Peter has not commented as yet ?? Perhaps we scared him off 🙂 1 Quote Link to comment
Peter Telleman
hahaha, I've been reading all of them, not easily scared, and I will look into all options. Thanks for all the quick replies 🙂 Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
i'm a fan of Kevin's solution. I use the custom selection often. I save the selections and add them to a palette, then add the palette to my library so I can import it into any file. Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
Like Jonathan, I pretty much live by my scripts (used to call them 'macro's). On any given day, even though I may add or subtract them as needed, it usually looks something lie this: Quote Link to comment
