michaelk
Does Tools> Set Origin... > Set origin to drawing center move the origin to the absolute origin or to the center of all the objects in the drawing? In the event that the origin gets dislocated, what is the SOP for putting it back? thanks mk Quote Link to comment
willofmaine
It sets it to the absolute origin. I don't think it's possible to dislocate the absolute origin. The 0,0 of the rulers can easily be changed, by dragging out of the intersection of the rulers at the upper left, and clicking to establish your desired 0,0. If you double-click on the same intersection, you'll get the Tools > Set Origin dialogue, where you can reset the rulers' 0,0 to match the absolute 0,0. Note that if you change the Y value of the ruler's 0, it will also be changed when you go to a 3D side view... HTH Quote Link to comment
michaelk
so drawing center = absolute origin? I'm aware of how to move it and the consequences of moving it. Just want to make sure that the drawing center isn't the center of all the object in the drawing. Quote Link to comment
Chris D
"drawing center" is the internal vectorworks absolute origin It's also the origin that things like the elevation benchmark tool use, regardless of what user origin you think you have set. Beware about moving the origin in Vectorworks...my advice is don't do it. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
That is also my advice. I'm helping out a friend with a drawing who's origin is just slightly off. It's causing lots of problems... Quote Link to comment

michaelk
Tools > Set Origin > select "Set origin to drawing center" (+, while you're there, select "Disable dragging for the Set Origin button") hth mk Quote Link to comment
bcd
Thanks Michael, I was afraid of that - the current project has been drawn 1/2 mile from the origin. I debated moving the origin, but decided to move everything to the origin instead. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
MUCH better idea! Sometimes I place a 2D locus where I wish the origin was and group everything on each layer. Then it's easy to select/modify others & drag the locus (that has been grouped into one of the layer groups) and the whole mess to 0,0. Quote Link to comment
Bruce Kieffer
Moving the origin makes a real mess of everything. Even though you change it in say top/plan, it has an effect on all objects in other views. I completely stopped changing the origin a while ago. Quote Link to comment
Ethan R.
Seems there should be a way to move the internal origin to a place that you want it? Maybe too many things are connected to it to move it ? Quote Link to comment
