John Windswept Design
I want to make a standing seam metal roof look like one with the seems casting shadows. As well I would love if board and batt siding had the same look. Is there a way of doing this without modeling each seam or batt? john t Quote Link to comment
J Lucas
I did that once on a project by modeling one panel of standing seam roofing then duplicating it to make a sheet of roofing large enough to cover the largest roofing plane on the project. Then I made a symbol of this. I then created working planes on each roof surface, placed and adjusted the symbol sheet of roofing as an object, and then trimmed each sheet of roofing in place to match each roofing plane. A bit time consuming but not unreasonable for the effect. I suppose it could be done with board and batt also. Only way I can think of to get real shade and shadows. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Bump map on a texture? Should work pretty well unless you need really close views - but then you could just model enough for the view in question. Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
Can you adjust the bump map to create a standing seam type texture? I just played around with it and I could not but I must admit that I'm not a pro at this aspect of VWR. Quote Link to comment
VincentCuclair
You can make any type of bump you want, either choose the same as the texture itself, use one of the predefined or create an image in grey scale. Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
Is there a description on how to create an image for bump map anywhere? I'm trying to make a standing seam roof. Do I create vw image? Quote Link to comment
Tobias
VW has a handy new feature (or at least new to me). Assuming you are using an image for the texture, Go to the edit texture dialogue Select 'Image' from the 'Bump' pull down-> Click 'Edit' next to the Bump pull down Click the 'Reuse an image...' radio button Select 'This Textures color' click ok Hit the 'Invert' image button you can also set the bump strength done. Love to see the texture when it is looking good. Quote Link to comment
rDesign
If you did want to go the modeling route - this company has standing seam metal roofing objects in Vw format: SteelSelect CAD library Vectorworks format (This handy link has been posted elsewhere in the forum). You could render a face-on image with shadows of one of these modeled roofing panels and use that as your texture & bump map. Regards, Tim Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Here are jpg, vwx, and png files showing how you might make standing seam roofing using a bump map. Quote Link to comment
Ozzie
Needed is a section in the forum for the 'handy links' Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
What about the Resource Share - Textures forum? A short writeup on the technique there would be great. Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
Hi Bill, Your Jpg looks GREAT! Just what I was looking for. I opened up your vwx file and I have the roof object with the texture. But for the life of me I can't make it look your jpg. I put in some lighting and I final rendered it. But it looks flat. Any ideas? Quote Link to comment
billtheia
I had three lights in the model already. Your problem might be related to the fact that my file was created in VW2010 and you are opening it in VW2011. Do you have a copy of VW2010? If so, try opening it there. If not, what rendering mode are you using. I would think that you should be able to simply open my file in VW2011 and render it using final quality renderworks and get results very similar to mine. I'm not sure how well the transition is working between the two versions of VW, though. Given the change to C4D engine, I suspect that there is a good chance that the translation is less than perfect. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
I used the Metal, Aluminum shader. You might take a look at the texture and see if that came through. I also had three lights: 1. A key light at cameral left, on 100% with shadows turned on 2. A fill light at camera right, on 25% with shadows turned off 3. A rim light behind the roof to the left, on 25% with shadows turned off Did the lights come through? Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
The lights did show up but the only shader is mirror @ 60%. I can't find metal or aluminum Quote Link to comment
billtheia
I was afraid that might be the case. The shaders in C4D were bound to be different than those in the previous version of RW. I've attached a screen shot of the settings for the aluminum shader. Perhaps you can use it to make your own reflectivity shader. Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
Thanks Bill that helped. I have it looking quite good. C4D has a some differences to be sure. I would love to know how you made the image bump. I'm sure there are a few of us out here :-) john t Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Image bump map: 1. Open Photoshop 2. Create new, blank image, 48px x 48 px. 3. Draw 1px wide black stripe at left edge 4. Draw 1px wide black stripe at 24px mark 5. Save as .png file Quote Link to comment
billtheia
I messed around with VW2011. Here are updated jpg & vwx files. You're right, things are a bit different. Fill & rim lights needed to be bumped up to 50% (from 25%). Shaders are COMPLETELY different. Quote Link to comment
John Windswept Design
Love the light shining off the roof. Into the depths of photo shop I go! Thanks John t Quote Link to comment
