  1. Maybe sometimes the focus is on architecture whereas we use it for interior design. In fact here in the UK VW is used extensively for interior design (google jobs). I have no idea about the world of architecture and VR (which is why I asked) but for sure ID is a great vehicle for VR
  2. Hi Alan, I am just at the start of things and learning C# so I can do more stuff in Unity. VW is in the pipeline for sure but I am not at that stage yet. With regard to VR then if VW are investing in it then they can see it is important so I don't think it is a bad place to move towards. Having said that they will never be a Unity, and I would not expect them to be, but I would like to provide a fully immersive experience than I think you will get with VW. With regards to the people who think it is not necessary then that's fine and maybe they are correct, time will tell. I am happy to keep you up-to-date with progress off board maybe. Interestingly the number 1 freelance job at the moment is VR including archviz walk throughs (go figure)
  3. I have a new project at work and it involves VR which at this point in time I know very little about but I do have a pipeline and am actively learning. I wonder that if I look back in 5-years from now that it will be the standard that the client expects to be able to walk around and interact with the building at a very early stage in the planning process or is this too much to ask for and it will be limited to large-scale or high-cost projects?
  4. Post processing in PS with a simple curves would make a big difference. It will make the render much richer by allow you to play with the contrast between light and shade.
  5. Not sure if you know but in VW in a top-plan (for example) go full screen and then take a screenshot of the floor area. Open this in PS and then on a new layer add you tile effect. Save as jpg and then import into VW. It is in proportion and will scale perfectly. The nice thing about this is once you have set it up in VW once you can then just make changes to the PS file and just swap out the texture (change texture) on the floor (or wherever you have the tiles).
  6. Thanks I guess you would not need an irregular shape as you can fit to the shape in Photoshop.
  7. Or post process in PhotoShop (if you have it of course)
  8. You can make the 2D text into 3D objects. Type the text and then select it. Text > Convert Text to polylines > ungroup > extrude. Note that if you extrude all together then you have a single extrude. It maybe better to extrude each text object separately.
  9. The student version has always had a watermark quite rightly so. However if you are a student and you want to purchase a non-student version they you can get up to 30% off (certainly in the UK) and 'a number' of your student/watermarked projects will be converted as part of the cost. There is also the for sale board on these forums or you can start with the fundamentals version. In all honesty there are some pretty decent deals out there http://www.vectorworks.net/education/student2pro
  10. For me the pipeline would be VW > C4D > Unity. Each of the transfers is 'rock solid' so you should not find any issues. Moreover with Unity you will find a lot of apps in the Asset Store that you help you more or less plug and play you idea.
  11. Interesting that VWs 'sister' company Maxon feel the need to Blog on the coming update and talk directly about their subscription and annual updates https://www.maxon.net/en/news/maxon-blog/article/the-maxon-service-agreement/ I guess it is a hot topic given that the president felt the need to blog and defend their approach. Not a million miles from this thread
  12. Not at all but I would expect that the plane flies before I strap myself in. Being told that the fix will be in SP2 as I hurtle to my death is not going to cheer me up.
  13. I find the whole situation laughable. I would never go into a store and hand my money over and not know what I was buying and worse still have to wait several months to find out what I had bought. The 'software' industry feels this is perfectly acceptable and its 2017. Other models have started to arrive over the last couple of years and I know its not everyone's preference but I like the Adobe model with regular updates and no huge disappointment once a year. I already know that UV Mapping will not make an appearance despite the fact that Sub-D is dead without it, I will still be exporting Tri's out of VW and Education users will get treated as second class citizens. I opened up Web VR only to find the lighting broken (took 10 seconds), Sub-D failed (2 bugs accepted immediately) after a few minutes....I could go on. Still no evidence of a public beta on the horizon which would massively help everyone as you know earlier what you are getting, an experienced army of testers are available, things work a lot better and the whole QA cycle is quicker. Maybe the phrase 'No Brainer' was invented for this?
  14. Five or so years ago I had not heard of VW and I had never touched a CAD package of any kind. I was new to teaching and someone asked me at the start of summer if I would teach VW. Being stupid and naive I said yes why not. I downloaded VW and then lived and breathed it for the whole of summer. Days, evenings, weekends, holidays and my wife would roll her eyes each time I mentioned VW. No magic bullet just hard work and crank out the projects which shows you are capable. Upshot is I have been teaching it for 6 years in Jan and why o why did I say yes
  15. In the UK I highly recommend http://www.designsoftwaresolutions.co.uk They got me up a running some years ago now and I believe they make site visits.
  16. I watched the video for this product and loved the way they do windows and roofs. http://www.lwcad.com/html/main/new.php
  17. Did you create the Sub-D object yourself or import it? If you imported it the size will be 10mm and you can change it to whatever you want it will make no difference because the map type is imported.
  18. +1 Also Alan Woodwell who goes above and beyond
  19. +1 I have started using C4D which then opens up all the possibilities listed. The pipeline VW > C4D is very good
  20. I teach students on iMacs and the majority have laptops outside of Uni (with varying versions of Windows). We have never had any issues at all. Just be aware there are a couple of difference such as the colour picker (which is native to the OS) but they are minor. The students also have different versions so are aware to File > Export as to trade between machines - once again no issues here
  21. Thanks Andy this is only part of the process: Model in VW > Flatten in VW > Illustrator > Arizona Printer (any medium and double-sided printing using the illustrator file) > laser cut the printed material using the illustrator file. I have tested the process end-to-end now and it works very well as you only have one driver file which is VW. That creates the Ai file (easy as copy and paste from VW) which is then used for colour printing and laser printing. Having a colour model is a real differentiator and I hope I can do it all justice with a good model. I am happy with my first production model and expect by the end of summer to be building some highly polished stuff. I have to teach it next January so need to get good at it I also use a scoring process which allows me to bend materials (see attached). It works very well and allows for a one-direction bend.
  22. So I was asked at work to produce a model and its not something I have done before so I kicked off the process this week and have my first draft model. My next move is to print the textures and the rebuild it but that will be after my holidays. I will share when done but it will be a while. It really is a case of just using a combination of unfold surfaces and extract planar surfaces and then manually adding tabs in VW before laser cutting and glueing. I can't build a real world model but I can now with VW
  23. Hi Michael do you mean that with the viewer on you can look around but you can't walk?
  24. I am not sure about this. I am still a novice with C4D but using the physical renderer takes away a lot of options which simplifies everything. Agreed
