2019 just crashed without warning - no backup file...

Question

Hi

VW2019 just crashed on me without any warning - it just shut down.

Where, if anywhere, should the autorecover or backup file be saved?

I'm running a GeForce GTX1070 with the latest studio driver:

I've run the diagnostics:

DxDiag.txt

Thanks,

Rob

Go to Vectorworks preferences under menu tools>options

look at the auto save tab to see where your backup location is.

I prefer to set up my back up options so that it saves every 15 operations without confirm before save and save the 5 most recent backups. I know it creates a lot of backups, and I know that they are all in one place. when I get low in HD space, I clean out the folder (and there is only one folder to clean out).

I found where the back-ups were supposed to be saved, but there was no back-up there. This might have been because it was set to over-write backups (which I have now changed to keep the last 5 back-ups), and when I opened the old file to see what had been lost this may have then overwritten the previous back-up).

It was set to autosave every 5 mins.

To prevent accidental over-writing of back-ups, it would be better if VW created a separate type of file for back-ups (i.e. basically the same but with a different suffix on the filename) which wouldn't then be over-written accidentally anyway. This is what happens with AutoCAD, where back-ups are .bak files, rather than .dwg files.

But this doesn't explain why VW crashed out in the first place - I certainly wasn't doing anything heavy.

I found that when the auto backups were set to mins the actual backup operation could cause the crash if it coincided with something you were actually doing at the time. I've recently changed from "mins" to "operations" which seems to cause less crashes.

I recently had 2020 crash when COMPLETELY UNATTENDED. (I was at dinner)

When I returned, the typical Mac crash message was up.

I assumed that it was caused by something in the "housekeeping" category, such as

autosaving or checking for update etc. That being said, I am on Catalina beta.. so weird behavior is to be expected./

I've personally found vw2019 less stable than previoius releases (after sp5) with more crashes and weird graphic behaviour.

I set backups to save every 7 minutes and end up with a lot of space taken up temporarily but storage today is so cheap
When we finish a project we keep all of the incoming, outgoing and latest VW files but delete all of the back ups
They then go to the cloud
