islandmon
pat, There are basically 2 options: 1) Create a 3D rock and map a texture to it. 2) Create an Image Prop and map an image of rock(s) to it. In order to make a convincing 3D rock model a few hundred polygons are required to form the 3d mesh surface. An Image Prop is simply a pic of one or more rocks. The Prop can be set to Cross-Planes giving a 3d look and shadows. Quote Link to comment
td4stage
I am wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of a tutorial on how to model large rocks. Or, if anybody has a rock model or two to share, that would be cool as well! thanks in advance! Quote Link to comment

propstuff
I had a go at lofting 4 or 5 irregular freehand NURBS curves (with a 3D locus at the top to cap it off) to make a surface. It doesn't have the gnarly surface that would be possible with a detailed mesh that EJ suggested, but with a highly irregular image based texture applied it didn't look too bad. Should be easily good enough for a set model. Also, it only took about 5 minutes of tests and re-runs to make and texture. it added about 600Kb to an existing model. HTH, N. Quote Link to comment
