Merging multiple layers

I've imported a simple plan drawing from an architect, and found there are many separate layers. 

I need to simplify the drawing as it's too time consuming jumping across so many layers.

Is there a way i can merge or reassign these?

I know i can reassign classes to None etc.. to simplify these so wonder if there's an option for Layers.

Set your Layer Options to Show/Snap/Modify Others.

Select All the objects.

In the Object Info Palette (OIP) click on the Layer pulldown and choose the layer you want all the information to reside on.

You will now have all your drawing on a single layer and a bunch of empty layers.

In either the Navigation Palette or the Organization Dialog Box choose the empty layers and delete them.

Another trick we used to do was to set the layer options to show/snap/modify, then select the objects you want, then modify on the menu bar and choose Group. This groups all the objects

@DAVID JAMES MORRIS Are you certain? When I look at the thread both I and Jonathan Pickup replied to you on September 25.

 

I don't think the forum pushes answers to you automatically. You either have to set up notifications (Click the Follow button at the top right) or manually check to see if anyone responded without "At-ing' (@) you user name that would notify you.

I was just talking about this yesterday - it would be great if on delete you got the option to move items to another layer like when you delete a class.  I'm always worried usingt eh method above that items will get left behind.
