brody98
I'm trying to figure out a straightforward way to render a 3d rock bed like the image shown, i have created one by placing groups of rocks but it still takes a long time. any help would be great, thank you. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
If you photograph the bed from above, you could make a texture that looked like rocks. You need to make sure that the texture tiles correctly and use a bump map to make it lumpy 1 Quote Link to comment
Popular Post Jeff Prince
@brody98 what Jonathan said, or go find a nice riverrock texture with a bump map already made for you 🙂. Lots of PBR textures can be found on the web which will suit your purpose. Note the geometry highlighted in orange and what a bump map does to create the illusion of geometry, even the shadow from the cylinder falls on the created texture. Final Renderworks necessary with all the good settings turned on, texture with displacement and self shadowing turned on too. all kinds of cool things are possible with textures. zoomer
What about the Plant Tool ? (I have VW Architecture only) You add a bunch of custom fake plants = Rocks (8-12 ?) and let the Plant Tool spread them with some randomness over the area ? 3 Quote Link to comment

zoomer
Probably ? I have no VW Landscape license nor experience with it. The thing where you can define areas, being filled with a group of plants, e.g. 30% of type A, 15% of B and 55% of plant C .... I just picked up in the past that Landscape planting offers the only randomize feature in whole VW. And thought that if planting can spread millions of 2D/3D Symbols over large areas, it may also work with some reduced Stone geometries, while keeping all PIO comfort for changes. But maybe the proposed RW Texture with bump shader by Texture Pads may be the easier and faster solution for large scale usage anyway. It was just an idea. Quote Link to comment

Foliage provides no plant inventory, it merely spreads, somewhat randomly, images/textures. I generally find it in the Visualisation Tool Palette. Quote Link to comment
zoomer
Looks like I have no access to all these Tools here. But I even see the Hardscape Tool. May be handy at one point. 6 minutes ago, Kevin Allen said: Not sure where Foliage ships, it is more of a rendering device than a planning tool. I thought this would be a planting area Tool or such and that would be a standard Landscape (or is it called Landmark) feature .... Maybe one could misuse the Irrigation Tools instead to spread rocks !? (Just kidding) Quote Link to comment
Jeff Prince
I miss Bryce 3D for creating and texturing random landscape features. That was my go to 20 years ago. 2 Quote Link to comment
zoomer
I see Im drawing myself in a corner with my missing expertise here .... But the newer generation would do their 3D Renderings in real time renderers (Twinmotion/Unreal) anyway. So while some VW Tools may produce perfect and aesthetic 2D drawings, in Twinmotion you would just insert some Quixel Mega Scan Objects of rock seas and Nanite, Lumen, Megaassemblies, .... will allow to realize that on your laptop .....
