digitalcarbon
So I am currently working on a big pdf management project using Bluebeam Revu...hyperlinks help. Just found out that any name refinements destroys any hyperlinks already set up... This also happens in VW with symbol names that are referenced into models...This means that all projects need to have an established naming system that does not get refined or corrected (typos) for the entire project...this is an impossibility... This means that you spend time later searching & reconnecting broken links... Now for those saying "well of course, if you change an address, then the "mail" won't get delivered...duh, mike" Well guess which software does not have this problem? In my favorite software, I can change the names of 500 parts/assemblies that are referenced into 10,000 projects and links NEVER get broken...NEVER...EVER. Did any of you know that such a universe existed? If you only knew. And Bluebeam Revu has a limiting "check in check out" system...so that means only one person can be working on a 575 page pdf...what a chore...I find it hard to believe that major construction companies are using this product. digitalcarbon
creativity and organization...these are two sides of the same coin. when you get into a creative zone you do not want to be worrying about how things should be named or organized...so you spend 8hrs on a creative spree...at the end of the day you realize that organizationally things are a mess...so you spend a few hours doing clean up... Paper and pencil seems to be the best tools to do creative ideas but when you are done...what do you do with it? organizationally, collaboratively you cannot do much...hence the value of computers. Great for organization but bad with creativity... that is why you had Ivan Sutherland Sketchpad in 1963 3d was clunky until Sketch-Up came out in 2000 to understand the name of an object you have to understand its purpose...that may not reveal its self until the creative session is done...then when you are doing organizational clean up you start to understand relationships better and the name will change (provided you attempted to name at the start vs part 1 part 2 etc) Hence the need to have your links not break when weeks or months later when you continue to do clean up... here again we have a "critical mass" or "tyranny of numbers" thing developing. we are going to get to a point where we have so much things referenced that you will be spending all your time reestablishing links that get broken...because the people managing the cad library are always doing cleaning and renaming as their library grows.. Image the phone company needing to reestablish all the phone connections because they happen to add another digit because 1-999-999-9999 has been maxed out. What we have is old paradigms being stretched to the maximum. Edited February 24, 2022 by digitalcarbon 1 Quote Link to comment

My hot take is that VW should be running a real physically distributed mixed-discipline office [preferably with real jobs] (architecture, landscape architecture, lighting, engineering..), and running a mix of platforms - win/max/linux. and a mix of common CAD in addition to several vw editions - Sketchup, Acad, Revit.. Sounds like a lot but they supposed to be a big company and yet we the 'users' are being used to test the software at no cost to VW. Quote Link to comment

Would be great. Because the different standards between Linux/Mac and Windows naming Paths is a nightmare itself. VW just imports everything, usually external, and packs it into its File Container. Which has its own problems and does not deal with OS differences at all. Edited February 24, 2022 by zoomer Quote Link to comment
