hollister design Studio
I want 'by class' hatch in Top/Plan and the 'by class' texture in 3D. It seems like an unstyled slab is the best option? I thought I could use 'Add 3D object to slab' for volume to match the pool shell if needed as thickness seems tied to the component stack. Side thought - Is there a way to pull volume for a worksheet? What do the long time users use? Quote Link to comment
Jeff Prince
@hollister design Studio I just extrude the pool shape about 1" to create the water plane. Autohybrid for your desired 2D appearance. I wouldn't recommend using a slab for water personally, far easier to control the geometry using modeling tools if you need to actually fill the pool with virtual water 🙂 1 Quote Link to comment
bcd
How have you modelled the pool? Chances are a solid intersection with a generating (pre shell) object and solid subtractoion of the pool shell with get it exactly. Quote Link to comment
hollister design Studio
Thanks guys @bcd But won't that leave me with an object that's transparent in Top/Plan? That does seem like it will get me an exact volume if I needed it though. @jeff prince I have been making Autohybrids - but I feel like they're messy. Hard to edit, a pain to ungroup, and always seemed to crash when I try and ungroup so I've stopped even trying. Fine if you're the type that designs it right the first time - but that's not my style! I like to flounder about a bit until I've found the right harmonies... ...and then make more changes because - well, just because. And then more floundering. Quote Link to comment

Yes, But you can Extract a Planar object for the pool surface & use it as the 2d componenet of a Hybrid Symbol together with the water solid if you don't want to go down the Auto-Hybrid route. AutoHybrid is actually decent enough in this single object case. But don't move it - and if you want to remake the volume simply Ungroup the AutoHybrid in a 3d view, discarding the 2d component, and rerun AutoHybrid when you're done. 2 Quote Link to comment

It really has nothing to do with design and everything to do with craftsmanship in terms of tool usage. Quote Link to comment
hollister design Studio
@jeff prince You should see my paintings... They take years and end up having three or four completed compositions buried as I move in different directions. I'm definitely a 'process' oriented person! 2 Quote Link to comment
