Christiaan
Say I've got a 3m high wall on a layer. On the model view I need the lower half of the wall to be brick and the upper half to be some other material. What's the best technique for achieving this with the least amount of mucking around? CipesDesign
Are the walls offset from each other in plan view? if so you can just draw a second, lower wall around the outside of the building, being careful to leave gaps (with no wall) at doors/openings. You can also give these lower walls their own class thereby enabling them to be visible (or not), as you choose, for different views. On the other hand, if the walls are aligned in plan view, then, depending on the level of realism you require, there are a couple ways. The most realistic would be for one wall to sit on top of the other. In this scenario you will need to adjust all your doors/openings so that they exist in one of the sets of walls, and are adjusted for height so they overlap the other walls, in which you will need to place a bunch of "cased openings" so that the doors/windows will not be obscured. Any way you look at it it invloves work! Hope that helps... [ 10-03-2005, 01:01 PM: Message edited by: CipesDesign ] Quote Link to comment
quigley
If its a rendering you are after just create an offset surface from the desired wall face and then trim it to the desired height. Then apply the material and render. The offset surface tool will automatically pick up windows/doors etc so no need to do any awkward trimming etc. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Is the 'offset surface' tool different to the 'offset' tool? If not, how do you use the offset tool to 'create an offset surface from the desired wall face'? Quote Link to comment
quigley
Offset surface is in the 3D tools as the last option in the Extract Tool (second from bottom). To use just select the tool, select the wall, enter the offset and you extract a surface from the wall. Quote Link to comment
mike m oz
Good tip KQ - now if it would automatically go into the reveals of openings it would be brilliant. Quote Link to comment
quigley
You could try offsetting the reveal faces as well maybe? Bit more work though! Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
That did the trick, thanks guys. Just to note, for Artlantis at least, I had to move the surface off the wall a bit for it to be visible (I moved it 1/2 a millimetre). Quote Link to comment
