wvancampen
What is the easiest way to convert a 3d model to 2d? For example, I have modeled a building, but a colleague who is only conversant in 2d skills wants to work on the elevations. So I have to take my modeled elevations (in Front, Back, Left, Right views) and convert them to 2d form (vector not bitmap-based, of course). As a corollary, this example shows a larger issue/problem I have with BIM. It raises the bar on skills, because it ideally requires all participants to have both 3d modeling and construction knowledge. We all know these people are rare. In the past, the lowest common denominator was 2d drafting skills, so even the most inexperienced person could be useful. So I find BIM (which I personally love)--on a practical level--makes collaboration more difficult. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
If you need to derive 2d line work from a 3d model, try creating a viewport rendered in Hidden Line mode. Make sure the VP is updated then use the Convert to Lines command. You will end up with a Group of lines. You can then either Ungroup or just enter the group to modify the line work. bcd
You can also do this directly in on a Design Layer. Select your objects, Modify>Convert>Convert Copy to Lines and select Hidden Line Render option. Quote Link to comment
Benson Shaw
But you might want the 3d data later, so suggest you dupe the layer or VP and convert the dupe. -B Quote Link to comment
