billtheia
VW2008 takes roughly 1.5 minutes to start the first time each day. After that, it only takes 7 seconds. This seems like a very long time for an application to start. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there some setting within VW that is making this happen? billtheia
Hello... Anyone out there? How long does it "normally" take for VW2008 to open on a Mac? Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
My 1 GHz G4 Powerbook takes about 40 seconds to load designer. Pat Quote Link to comment
Guest
Have you set up user folders (in VW) that reside on a network volume? Quote Link to comment
billtheia
No - I don't work on a network at all. Everything resides on my local drive. Quote Link to comment
D Wood
Please tell us you have a separate external back up drive of some sort! Do you turn your Mac off at night? If yes, do you run MacJanitor or something similar, say weekly? Do you regularly Repair Permissions using Disk Utility? Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Yes - I have an external drive for backups. Yes - I turn off my mac at night but run chron maintenance (OnyX) and repair permissions on a regular basis. Do any of these things have an affect on how long it takes for an application to start? How long do you find that it takes for VW to start up? Quote Link to comment
D Wood
Well, I never turn VW off. I do restart fairly frequently, then VW takes no more than 20-30 seconds I think - I've never actually timed it, but it doesn't seem that long. It does take longer the bigger the file I am opening with, so maybe that's a clue. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee klinzey Posted October 11, 2007 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 11, 2007 Do you have a lot of files in your favorites? Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Well, yes I do have lots of files in my favorites. Does this really have an affect on VW's load time? I assumed that they were just pointers. Is VW loading all of these files every time I start the program? Quote Link to comment
Cris with no H
Well, that's the problem. VW does look into each file and records the resources available there. Cris Dopher Quote Link to comment
Guest
Regarding favourites, how many is a lot? That startup time should not be increased by too much if the number is less than 40. Also, a large number of plug-ins will slow down launch time. Due to the nature of Mac OS X, the first launch of the application will typically take a long time, subsequent launches should have an improved launch time. If the computer is restarted everyday, you'll have that initial delay every time. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Favorites seems to have been the reason. I removed them all and now it only takes 20 seconds to start the first time. I had 20 libraries in my favorites which must have included hundreds of individual symbols. It sees kind of odd that VW essentially loads all favorites rather than simply providing a pointer to them. I wish that there was an easier way to get to symbols without having to preload them - hunting through the directory structure every time I need something is a pain. I guess I'll have to decide which is more efficient - waiting for VW to load or hunting for symbols. At least now I know how it works. Thanks all for your help. Quote Link to comment
