Bruce Kieffer
I'm adding dimensions to a viewport using edit viewport edit annotations. They are not associative even though my preferences are set to associative dimensions. Can I get them to associate? It sure would be nice if viewport dimensions would update when an object is resized in the drawing. Quote Link to comment
islandmon
This is appears to be a specific limitation of Layer Links. Quote Link to comment

Bruce Kieffer
Layer Links? Associative dimensioning is not supported in viewports. Understood, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a viewport's ability to be updated? Aside from not adding dimensions to a viewport until you're absolutely sure you're done drawing (ha ha!), what alternatives are there to adding the dimensions? Keep in mind I have 3D objects that I need to dimension in plan, front and side views. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
We put our dims on the Design Layer. Haven't had any problems doing that. Quote Link to comment
RubenH
On sections viewports, too!!! Quote Link to comment
islandmon
Layer Links? Associative dimensioning is not supported in viewports. What was met is that ViewPorts use"Layer Linking" similar too Linked Layers. Therefore, if associated dimensions do not work on Linked Layers then they will not work with VP annotations which uses Layer Links ... sorry for the confusion ; ) Quote Link to comment
Bruce Kieffer
We put our dims on the Design Layer. Haven't had any problems doing that. I'm just starting to use viewports to make dimensioned top, side and front views of 3D objects. Please explain how you add associative dimensions in the Design Layer that work when you switch views say from top to front? Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
You will need to put the dimensions in different classes (say, Dim-Front, Dim-Top, etc.) Then in each viewport, only turn on the class that is appropriate and make the other Dim classes invisible. Pat Quote Link to comment

Pat I have done that kind of approach using design layers and classes. I'll give it a try with viewports. I hope the dimensions associate that way. Quote Link to comment
Bruce Kieffer
OK... I guess I'm all goofed up! I don't think I can use associative dimensioning on any 3D objects. It only works on 2D objects. It doesn't matter if they are in a viewport or design layer. Can others of you confirm this please? Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
As long as the dimensions are in the design layer (same layer or at least same scale and view) as the original objects, you should be able to associate. I just checked, and it appears that you can only associate to 2D objects, not 3D. If this is the case, you might as well just dimension in the viewport as you will have to edit the dimensions manually no matter what. Pat Quote Link to comment
