Boriqua
Hey Everyone I have a model that is tapered in the middle and hollow on the inside. Kind of like the neck of vase. I want to punch holes through the skin so light can spill in and out of this shape but when I try to subtract a solid from this vase shape it punches through no problem but turns my vase shape into a cylinder? Can I do what I am trying or have I bumped the cieling. Thank you for any help Alex Quote Link to comment

Jonathan Pickup
I can do this. But have you also considered that you can punch holes with a transpearancy map rather than modelling? Quote Link to comment
Boriqua
I made a shape did a sweep and created my swans vase neck shape. Archoncad ... I bow to your skills What is a transparancy map, how do I use it and is it impossible to do it the way I am trying. That is COOL! I am actually designing a tower for a childrens museum and I want colored transparant apertures. Alex Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Andrew Bell@NV Posted October 18, 2006 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted October 18, 2006 Are you expecting a faceted surface and getting a smooth one, or is your swan's neck disappearing, replaced by a simple cylinder? Quote Link to comment
Boriqua
I just want to punch homes through the skin of this or something very much like it. Alex Quote Link to comment
islandmon
Yes, a Texture with transparency works: Quote Link to comment
propstuff
Alex, I just had a go at a shape like yours, and it worked for me. Can you write out step by step what you did. Also, can you post the shape you swept. N. Quote Link to comment
Boriqua
http://members.cox.net/aboriqua63/Untitled2.mcd That is a link to the file. Basically I created a cylinder that I then used to pierce the vase and hit subtracte solid. But then for whatever reason the vase turns into a cylinder? Can someone tell me more about transparancy textures. That looks like a handy tool to have in my bag of tricks. Alex Quote Link to comment
mike m oz
Boriqua, I tried it with your file and encountered the same problem. It seems to me that the problem comes from your initial sweep shape being made up of two unclosed polygons. What happens is the polygons closes to complete the solid shape resulting in your cylinder. If you edit your 2D shapes so that they will compose into a single polygon the solid subtraction will works fine. Quote Link to comment
