Texture cannot be applied to faces of a non-history-based object

Question

Huh?  I'm trying to apply a brick texture to the gable face of a solid subtraction (see attached file) and I get the message "Texture cannot be applied to faces of a non-history-based object."  Why?  It's a solid subtraction of a solid addition of 3D symbols and a generic solid.  Is that not history?  (And, in any case, can't we apply textures to faces of generic solids, which have no history?...).  (Vectorworks 2022)  VWIS234
