  1. I think this has been a problem for a while. I have a drawing that I forgot to add a drawing label to. I need the drawing name, scale, drawing number, sheet in the label. So, I go to the Drawing Label Tool, double click it to get the dialogue box and click the spot where it want it to go. Sigh. Nothing but a locus point. Here is what should happen: it should mimic exactly what I would have seen had I remembered to create a drawing label when I created the viewport. I should double-click on the tool, insert it while in the Annotations window, and continue working. Right now, it does not work as it should. It doesn't work at all. It doesn't seem to be a classes problem. Will this be fixed at some point? Are there any workarounds for this or yet another button I have neglected to tick? Thanks for any help. MH Brown
  2. Thank you both! This looks like what I need; I'll check it out. MH Brown
  3. Thanks for the experimentation! I've noticed similar behavior in other operations. I think some of the objects get complicated histories and just need a kick in the head at some point. I appreciate the tip. I will definitely use it! MH Brown
  4. Often, I have an object that is sitting at an angle from my screen, usually it is 45 degrees. Consequently, my front and side views are not really useful for looking at it straight on. No problem, right? I just select a plane with the Set Working Plane tool and then select Look At Working Plane. I now have a straight on view of my object. The problem is that if I use my number pad to look right, left, top, or bottom it reverts to the 45 degree angle. What? It should accept the new orientation for every view, but it does not. If this is the default, it should be changed. It is unlikely that anyone would want this outcome. If I'm just missing something simple, I'm happy to change it. If this is the way it is designed to work, it needs to be fixed so that it works as I described. I'm thinking it's probably human error on my part, so I'd be very grateful if someone could let me know where to correct it. Thanks, MH Brown
  5. Bummer. I can get that kind of failed results already with OBJ import. I don't really need another import option that doesn't work. I have plenty already.
  6. Hi Bart. Thank you for your great tip. You are correct in that VW sees my shape this way...and it is dead wrong. That is the base problem. The thing is, my shape DOES have a top, bottom, and four sides and VW can't see it. I actually do convert my objects to 3D polys as a work-around, at which point Vectorworks has no problem discerning the shape correctly: it breaks it down into the curved top, bottom, and four sides. If it sees it as a six-sided box when converting to 3D polys why can't it see it as a six-sided box when I'm using the Single Face texture tool? Well, sloppy coding is generally the answer. This is a classic software bug with a new tool and it needs to be fixed. After all, converting it to 3D polys means I can't fillet the edges, add solids, or, in fact, do anything to the object. Turning it into a group of 3D polys is, in short, a dead end. What I want is for the tool to work properly, no excuses, no workarounds. Thank you again for answering. I'm hoping that someone from VW will chime in on what they are doing about it. MHBrown
  7. Does no one have an idea as to why the Single Face Map tool is not working for me? Has anyone tried it on the file I uploaded here? Thanks for any help. It really is annoying that I can't use this tool (especially in the absence of perimeter mapping.) Thank you, MH Brown
  8. Ah! Thank you Pat. How did I miss that? I was looking in all the Preferences and never thought to look at the Edit Viewport options. I think I have done it so many times I just blow right past it. As is often the case it's operator error. Believe it or not, this will save me lots of time. MH Brown
  9. I think it used to be this way, now it only works this way in wireframe. When I have a viewport and I want to adjust the crop I cannot see anything beyond the existing crop when I enter the edit window. That's fine if I want to crop it tighter, but, 99% of the time I want to expand the cropping rectangle to show more of the model. This is impossible to do if the rest of the model is invisible, which it is unless I'm in wireframe, which I almost never am. I have to go back to the OIP, change to wireframe, make my crop, go back to the OIP, change it to the rendering mode I want. Lots of steps. So, in short, make the whole model visible (ideally grayed out beyond the existing crop) while in Edit Crop mode. Thanks, MH Brown
  10. Thanks for posting, Grant. I see now what my problem was. If you use the Visualization palette to select a light to edit you cannot select soft shadows. It is grayed out with a small square in the selection box. I suppose this is a bug with the palette. So, I selected the light on my design layer and, what do you know, I could then select soft shadows and get the same effect you get in your sample rendering above. Thanks for the help! MH Brown
  11. Duly noted. Thanks! MH Brown
  12. Thank you, yes, I have "Physical Sky, Mostly Sunny" selected, but I'm not getting natural looking shadows one would expect from sunlight. Their edges are far too crisp. Is it possible to have soft shadows with a Directional light? MH Brown
  13. I don't do many exteriors, so I'm probably doing something wrong. I have a single Directional light in the scene (acting as the Sun). I'm using Redshift and it seems to do fairly well. It's not really close to what I can get with the Final Rendering style with Renderworks, but it is not bad. The one thing I miss, however, are soft shadows. The Soft Shadows selection in the light's OIP is grayed out AND has a gray square in it. What's up with that? That doesn't mean anything. Anyway, how does one get soft shadows with Redshift? I realize there are many things that are not (yet?) supported. Is a Soft Shadows setting one of them? Thanks, MH Brown
  14. To Bill O. That is actually good news. I'll check that the next time it happens, MH Brown
  15. I'm on Windows10, VW2023 SP7 and, yes, this happens to me from time to time. Suddenly, none of the snaps work. It is as if I am holding the tilde key down. It doesn't seem to follow a pattern and I have to restart VW to get it working again. MH Brown
  16. Member 225 I posted this before, but it was on an old thread. I am revisiting this problem with a new thread and uploading a file this time (which I should have done the first time.) It is a problem that persists on and on: the single face tool places textures on adjoining faces. Not all of them, just some. I am attaching a file created in VW2023 SP7. The texture placed on the face that has the word "Sponsors" will also run across the curved top and down to the other side. There is no way to place a texture map on just one of any of those three faces. The same thing happens on other extrudes (or any 3D object) but turning the corners instead. Sometimes it works fine. This is a problem across all of my files, every day, with every version of VW2023. I really need this to be fixed...plus bring back perimeter mapping. Any advice? If you do not see this problem with this file, then does anyone know how I can repair my particular installation of VW? I'm also attaching what I see in the OIP with this file. At present, the tool cannot be used, so I'd love to figure this out. Thanks for any advice! MH Brown TEST file for troubleshooting.vwx
  17. Thanks for the tip! I'll certainly do that. MH Brown
  18. The suggestion that you lock the site model does not work, as anyone who has tried can tell you. It has nothing to do with the site model, however. It has to do with its general class: "Very Large Objects." If you are zoomed in and working on, say, a streetlight, you are most likely working on top of the site model, a classic VLO. If you have locked it, you will inevitably click on it. Even though it is locked, it is still able to be selected. What?! Until you zoom out and de-select it you will be unable to continue to work on your streetlight or anything else. It is a real pain. It makes me have to place large objects on its own layer or in its own class, which is never a part of my class/layer taxonomy. I rarely organize things by size. Needless to say, this puzzling behavior is absolutely wrong. A locked object--any object, but especially very large objects--should not be selectable with a simple mouse click. It should only be selected with a key combination and a mouse click. After all, you may want to eventually unlock it. This would be a very simple and helpful fix. I'm curious as to why the problem persists. That said, I'm still mostly on VW2023, so perhaps in VW2024 it has been fixed. Has it? MH Brown
  19. Thank you, I think I need to do a little research along the lines you all suggest, mainly color output control. Since this is a new problem after nearly two years, I must have unwittingly changed something. Thanks for the help! MH Brown
  20. Yes, I publish the 32 Viewports, each on its own page, as a 32 page PDF document for viewing on screen (no printing involved). The same published PDF has darker images on the Mac than it does on the Windows machine. Is there a way to select the color output on either machine? MH Brown

  22. My main work computer is a Windows 10 with VW2023. Sometimes, however, I'll take a file from the Windows machine and put it on the Mac--which is running VW2024-- so I can publish it while I work on another project. I've noticed on my most recent file that the Mac VW2024 renders the images much darker than the ones rendered on the Windows VW2023 computer. I would say this is just a difference in the monitors, but I've done this quite often and this is the first time I've seen this kind of difference. Any ideas? It is a 32 page PDF, so I don't think going in and tweaking the lighting on each viewport is a solution. I'm looking for some global setting that affects what would normally be the print output in older times. Something like that. Or any other solution. Thanks, Mike
  23. Thanks for the tips, however, many of the objects listed in the spreadsheet/database have the right click "view object" grayed out. Nothing happens when I click on those objects. That actually makes sense since the objects are not in the file (rather than on some forgotten design layer or far away from the origin). I'll check my database criteria and make sure I don't have something wrong. That is probably where the problem lies. Thanks again! MH Brown
  24. Thank you! This is very helpful. Now, I just have to figure out why my spreadsheet/database report is showing symbols that are not in the file. They may have been in at one time, but they were deleted a while ago. Certainly, they were deleted before recalculating the spreadsheet.
