Christiaan replied to P Retondo's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
I suspect this aspect of VW may get some work done on it when this feature is being implemented: http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthrea...66931#Post66931 -

If we do I can't work how to use it. Pasting a superscript piece of text doesn't work either. -

Better Resource Browser
Christiaan replied to grant_PD's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
From some of my discussions with NNA people I think a new Resource Browser is being worked on. Here's some other relevant wishlist items: Resource browser interface http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB20&Number=61234 Resource Browser http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB20&Number=60867 Better support for networked resources http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB20&Number=62213 Replace symbol function: needs to remember last choice http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB20&Number=53230 Ability to centralise and synchronise resources http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB20&Number=64697 -
Realistic Renderings ??.... help the newbie, plz
Christiaan replied to Plani_Choix_Mike's topic in Rendering
Can you post the VW file Ray, so I can compare with Artlantis? -
Well, it appears this has been resolved with the latest version of VW (v12.5) and the Artlantis export plugin (v12.5.0.3). Dunno who sorted it out (Nemetschek or Abvent) but we're happy campers. Thanks!

Evening with NNA in London - October 2006
Christiaan replied to Christiaan's topic in General Discussion
Climate change? Busy programming? Offset costs I imagine. ?15 was pretty good for the meal we had, a glass of wine and venue. Presumably you're better off asking Computers Unlimited this question. Can't do everything at once? -

By the way Kaare. Maybe you'd like to send me the Vectorworks file for the above image and I can export to Artlantis to compare? -

Haha, yeah, I may be a geek, but that doesn't mean Artlantis is for geeks! -
I attended the evening with NNA, organised by Computers Unlimited, last night and it was a very satisfying evening. Great venue, great food, decidedly helpful presentations, topped off with remarkably useful meetings with the software engineers. The presentation of new features by Dan Monaghan and Biplap cottoned me on to a few features I'd missed so far, such as the paint bucket tool for creating polygons within a space, path objects more compatible with other tools, contextual menus for viewports, and the new chain dim tool. All simple but very effective improvements. Jonathan Reeves, architect, presented some projects he's been working on and did a great job of showing the potential of many of the new features, especially in terms of 3D modelling. As he pointed out, it can be argued that we are at a point where 3D is finally starting to fullfil its potential. Then we had a nice meal, afterwhich we split into two groups to discuss wishlist items with the engineers, Biplap and Dan. Armed with a large wishlist I managed to largely set the agenda for both groups. The biggest wish being the ability to rotate our view/coordinate system. You can read my report of Biplap's comments here: http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthrea...66931#Post66931 Some other things I requested or reiterated and talked to Biplap about: 1) More intelligent live sections (including the addition of wall components) - Biplap acknowledged that they were working on this 2) Ability to centralise, synchronise and manage resources on network 3) Small print preview window in the print dialogue box (like Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office, etc.) 4) Support for tilt 'n' turn windows in the window PIO (a largely european thing I understand) 5) Option to centre viewport on sheet at creation 6) Pull-down menu for Class Mapping files in the Class Mapping dialogue Some other things I got on the agenda for the other group, but didn't manage to talk to: 1) Ability to split walls into two or more materials. 2) Ability to dimension the structural core of walls so that we don't have to choose between drawing correctly (in certain situations) or dimensioning. Couple of feature I forgot to request or talk about: 1) Inclusion of window elevation in window schedules and the ability to make changes to these elevations and see those changes in the model 2) Ability to select multiple objects which are inserted in walls

Well things a moved on a little since then. I think Artlantis is so fast and easy because it's designed entirely around the rendering process, whereas Renderworks has to fit into the CAD/modelling paradigm. There is really no comparison when it comes to ease of use and speed. I'm going to do some more controlled experiments now that 12.5 is out and I'll let you know how things go. -

The ability to rotate the coordinate system/view
Christiaan replied to Laurence_R's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Just got back from the evening with NNA in London. A very satisfying evening I must say. Great venue, great food, decidedly helpful presentations, topped off with remarkably useful meetings with the software engineers. Useful enough to find out that our rotate view wish is at the top of the list of things to implement, that they are working on it, and that the way VW deals with 2D and 3D objects is indeed the main obstacle. Not, however, because of any programming difficulties but because of how to deal with legacy files. It was pointed out that they could have maybe implemented something a bit quicker but that it wouldn't have been the best way, and that they're taking the time to get it right. I was glad to hear this. It's good to know it's being worked on and what some of the issues are. Makes it much easier to plan ahead and explain things to bosses and colleagues, etc. P.S. nice to meet you John. -
Cinema 4D is very powerful, including such things as render farm capabilities, but it has a steep learning. Artlantis is easy to learn, very fast and creates very good renders (it's what I mainly use): http://www.artlantis.com/community/galerie/index.php?cla=note Another option you might like to look at for very high-end realistic renders is Maxwell Renderer: http://www.maxwell.com/ SketchUp is a great modelling and presentation tool for the conceptual stage of design.

Have you used Artlantis Kaare? -
Visually it may appear to you as if nothing is in the file but that doesn't mean there isn't some clues in the file. Insert the window, save the file and send it. At the very least you'll be able to eliminate a few possibilities. No, you should be able to do this.

The ability to rotate the coordinate system/view

Interesting thought Eric. It would be helpful to know NNA's current thoughts on this. Hopefully I'll get a chance to discuss it tonight with NNA in London. -
Realistic Renderings ??.... help the newbie, plz
Christiaan replied to Plani_Choix_Mike's topic in Rendering
Renderworks may be able to "do the job," but not in a few clicks, which was my point. Quality renders with a "few clicks" is something Artlantis excels at. So it's a little strange to suggest Artlantis is for geeks, when Renderworks is the one you need all the training for. I use both Renderworks and Artlantis on a near daily basis and I don't consider Renderworks to be a competing piece of software; I just use them for different things, and realistic renders in a few clicks is not a job for Renderworks. And you don't need to "train" to produce work with Artlantis. Once you learn how to operate the interface (a 10 minute lesson), you can get on with making quality renders at the click of a few buttons. -
That did the trick, thanks guys.

Indeed. For that you'll want to use Artlantis instead: http://www.artlantis.com/ -
Thanks again. How do I stop it from selecting and moving everything and instead only move the object I have selected?
-
Thanks islandmon. I just need to move the object (because I'll select it manually) but just using the last two lines to create a script didn't work. Presumably I'm doing something basic wrong. P.S. I'm printing out the manual for bed time reading as we speak.

Problems with 'Create Walls from Polygons' v12.5
Christiaan replied to Christiaan's topic in General Discussion
Gunther Miller let me know that, "you?ll want to use the, ?Objects from Polyline? command in the following location: Modify > Convert > Objects from Polyline. This menu command replaces the older, ?Create Walls from Polygons? command with better results."
