  1. ah, ok that makes sense, sort of! It's not feasible to change the doc's units since it's all in imperial. I use metric for calculations and our code tables. very inconvenient. =Area worked! Thought I had tried that, but obviously not. thanks for all your help!
  2. Thanks Michaelk!! it's just like excel, which I also didn't know how to use til today. but I did learn how to export/import back, but it lost the modifier equations in the import back. it worked like a charm on another worksheet though. yay. next question: is there a way to do a similar thing to this worksheet which uses space data - I need to convert area to sq.m. plus do other similar calculations as the first one, but my document is in imperial. (unfortunately)! I tried adding the modifier (divide AREA by 10.764) as an extension to cell 2C, shown here, changed cell format to decimal, with 2 decimal places, but this is the result. hope this one is as simple to fix. thanks
  3. Hi VW peeps at the risk of asking a really dumb question - how do you insert a formula to do simple math operations within each row? I have tried everything. easy sample here: footings and piers: (I have a monster worksheet that I can't bear to think about if I have to enter the operations in every cell manually - I did create that using spaces, but that's another question - how to add a similar math operation on that?). **should I export the worksheet to excel and do the calculations there? The numeric values here are just entered manually. I need to multiply col. B x C =D. then need to multiply D x 2.4kPa to get E then another multiple for F, and a conversion multiplier to imperial for G....for the jobsite. this should be simple, but many hours later.....I did try VW help, this forum, many worksheet tutorial videos... learned lots, but didn't find anything on this specifically. I'll sign off as anonymous lol. thank you!
  4. I also have issues with VW bogging down, and have searched for info on ways to keep files lean - but no luck. Is there a list of certain types of things that will slow it down, so that we know where to start looking when it happens? (ie I see pdf's and dwg's mentioned in this thread - do these make a big difference even for smaller files?) thanks
  5. Ed - yes definitely see the difference between NF NY & ON. I'd say more in wine country, but wind turbines are nearby! 🙂
  6. thanks Ed and Pat. I'll do the backups to the hard drive - sounds like that will help.
  7. Thanks Ed and Pat. yes, purging the backups well after the job is done makes sense - something that I will do! mine is set to save the last 3 backups, auto-saved every 5 minutes. so I guess that is not causing too much of a slow-down... On purging the file itself (or cleaning my room!) - what are the memory/RAM hogs that slow things down? I am reading that rendered perspective views, and bitmaps, are 2 culprits. what about imported jpegs (like aerial mapping of conservation authority shading for ex.)? or pdf of survey when dwg not available? those are things I generally wouldn't want to purge though. extrusions? numerous DL's? Ed - Landartma; NF, NY? I live in Vineland Ont. but have a best she-buddy in NF NY. oh, and I see my info says VW 2019 which was correct back then. should read 2021. thanks again!
  8. Thanks for the advice on the backups - same issues here, where the backups end up in weird places, and the backup occurs when in the middle of a big-deal operation, lol. or else I get a message asking if I want to delete the entire file...yikes... I will send backups to my hard drive now, rather than dropbox. another question - when you "purge" what kinds of things do you get rid of? what are the big culprits for hogging memory? and also ***any thoughts on what causes things to bog down when using VW, and how to keep things lean and mean while using it? been meaning to ask this for awhile! thanks, from Lisa
  9. thanks everyone - I found the problem with the hidden line surface hatch not showing . feel like a dummy - I had to edit the actual wall styles in the RM - the siding components had a default setting for the class material of steel for some reason... I was sure I had checked that, but...guess not. thanks again
  10. Are there any solutions to this that have been shared? I have a similar problem - one wall type shows the surface hatch in hidden line elevation VP - other different walls do not. settings seem to be the same for the various walls -ie in OIP - render by component. wall components seem to have same types of settings appropriate to their surface/material... display surface hatch on in background settings. classes are on....what to try next? thanks
  11. seems I stumbled on something that worked - setting the display at 150% for the small screen, to match the large screen. will see if that makes the diff. thanks
  12. Hi, along these lines, a similar thing is happening, but Navigation palette is just missing. not behind anything, the tab is checked under Window-Palettes.... I tried your suggestion above, BUT it was not visible when I shut down, therefore nothing reset to make it visible. another thing that happens is that dual monitor thing with palettes moving, or becoming much larger than the screen, and I am constantly moving them back and resizing them... I just got a nice 32" screen, as the main one, with a 23.5" one as the 2nd monitor - this is where I had the OIP, RM, snapping and Nav Palettes, with my drawing on the larger one. any suggestions on finding the Nav. palette *most importantly*, and also on the other glitch, would be much appreciated. thanks.
  13. Thanks for taking the time to clarify and add more info. And for the advice re surface object textures vs component textures by class. I found one good VW video on surface textures, and now think I know why I was having trouble using it with walls. Will report back with more questions, I am sure! I think this topic could be a 2+ hr course! thanks again. Lisa
  14. Ok - will do. I work alone and get too comfortable with doing things the hard way lol. time to learn more to save time. so thanks!!
  15. Ah - thanks again Boh, and Pat, I very much appreciate the help. Lisa
  16. Sorry thought I had sent this - thank you - I think that's the key - the wall core is in the MODEL-WALL class, which is where you draw the wall. then you set/define the other components into whatever specific classes you want. I thought the whole wall had to be either "by component" or "by object" - and I didn't know what kind of class heirarchy to use - rather than having just the wall core "by object". Do I have that right? And you still have sub categories like: MODEL-WALL-EXT or INT I will see if I can get things working again with this info. I don't mind having lots of classes to get the most out of this program, as long as they are organized. thanks so much for your help!
  17. thanks - I think I've made a mess of the classes, and have to dig out of the pit and streamline them. I have various "component" classes and various "wall" classes - both with many sub classes including ext finish and sub classes of that with cladding types. Many do not say "use at creation" so that may be one part of the problem. I see on your screen shots (which were super clear btw) that you use the heirarchy: Component-WALL-Cladding Do you also have classes like: Wall-Component-Cavity etc? and if so how do you know which to use? thx again 🙂
  18. thanks very much Boh. I will try this. I didn't find a video on this specifically after much looking.
  19. are there any good tutorial videos on this?!
  20. ok thanks! I'll figure out how to do that - it will save a ton of time. It's only for the exterior finish.
  21. Does this mean we can designate the exterior finishes as separate component classes, and then toggle between them to show clients different options for exteriors? (ie different siding types and colours?) thanks
  22. hi - is there any update on Linux/Ubuntu compatibility? I'm being strongly encouraged to switch, but have only found this thread that addresses this question. Also, nothing in the general VW software req's. thanks
  23. thanks! I will check them out- I use classes for a lot of things but not getting it re doors windows walls etc. thanks again!
  24. I'll try that - I'm not so good with textures classes components etc but it's past time to learn! thanks very much
  25. Is there an easy way to present views with a few different siding colors without replacing all the walls? Just for the client to visualize and choose, project is nearly finished, and I'd like to do some perspectives in open GL with the colours they like. thanks!
