I'm going to presume that the room you describe is defined by wall objects or lines. If you have VectorWorks Architect, you can simply use "Create Spaces from Walls" command to create Space objects (which can be filled like polys, including hatches) for all your rooms. If not, then you can automatically create a poly that will fill the room by selecting all the walls or lines that bould the room and using the "Combine into surface" command that will "fill" the room with a poly that can then be filled with hatch or other fill.

What I found out is that you can draw a polyline and then double click the desired hatching and the area defined by the polilyne will change with the selected pattern. After that, sent the area to the back so I could see the plumbing fixtures on top of the floor. Works great!
