Update Symbol

If I create a symbol in my "objects library" file, place the symbol in another file, and then modify the symbol in the objects library file, shouldn't the symbol update in the other file? How do I make that happen?

It depends on whether you imported it or referenced it in originally.

If the symbol name is in italics in the RM then it has been referenced and you need to update the reference Navigation Palette>References>Update Reference.

 

If it has been imported go to the objects library and this time Reference the symbol rather than importing it, replacing the existing symbol instances in the active document with the reference symbol.

The more I think about this I can see reasons not to have every symbol auto update. I'm going to test the settings you suggest bcd.
