Force objects to move at grid intervals

This has eluded me forever. When I'm in front, right, or left view, I cannot move 3D objects and keep them on my grid unless I turn off "snap to object," which I want on the rest of the time. So how can I make this work? My grid is 1/16".

Hold down the Command key while you drag and you should move in snap grid dimensions. If the object was originally on the grid it should stay on.

 

Similarly, if you hold down the Shift and Command keys and use the arrow keys the object will Nudge by the snap grid.

 

I recommend that you set a much larger grid Maybe 6 or 12 inches in a test file and play with it there so you can easily see the results.

Holding down the command key does not work for me. Using the command+shift key kind of works if I shift slightly away from the clicked grab object point as I drag.  I remembered my past solution... Use screen plane mode instead of working plane mode.
