Trouble with extrude along path in 3D

OK, I will rephrase my statement.

 

I, Pat Stanford, could not make the Exponential mode of the Extrude Along Path menu command work on a non-straight (either polygon or curved poly line).

 

I am open to someone showing me what I missed.

Yeah we figured out it only works with a curve. I got some alternatives and was able to complete my project
