BINM
Just changed over to VW2008 from VW12 I have set my preferences as previously; autosave every 15mins>confirmation before>create backup folder in same location as original file. However, I am getting a message error when I confirm create backup Internal Error - failure encountered during disk I/O operation (Failure on attempt to open file I am working on a MAC G5 OS X Version 10.4.11 (I have done software update), but saving to a Server. Another small query is the increased file size after conversion from VW12, any hints? Thanks people Edited January 7, 2008 by BINM Quote Link to comment
lucylou
I have had a fairly similar problem however i dont save a separate file but over ride the existing one. i am also saving across to the main computer via a network. i thought it was something to do with the file size and my (slow) computer struggling to send my info across to the network but im not entirely sure how it all works. i do know that i have to re-name the file (as in a save-as) and then all is fine. next time it happens i will post exactly what it says. BINM
you mean, do a save-as of the file and then the back up function works ok? I'll try that. Thanks for the tip. Its fairly annoying though, and a little worrying, I know I got some file corruptions etc when changing from 11 to 12. Quote Link to comment
BINM
I did a save-as, but had the same problem and error message! help! Quote Link to comment
BINM
Anyone else experiencing this problem? One of the others in the office has located some of the backup files in the user folder on the hard-drive, despite the preference being set to save the backup in same location as original file, i.e in same folder on the server. Would a re-install help? Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
I think is has to do with files that are not saved yet. If you do a Save As on a file, I don't think that VW actually saves the file to disk, just changes the display name and closes the original file. When the Autosave kicks on, since the file does not exist on disk, it autosaves to the disk root. As soon as you make a change and manually save the file, the backups will save to the correct location. You might want to file this as a bug if it bothers you. Pat Quote Link to comment
monkey
i am receiving the 'failure encountered during disk I/O operation (Failure on attempt to open file' message when i try to save a current file. i am also noticing that VW is creating a backup file when i know that this option is turned off, very annoying as i keep having to delete these files all the time, in some cases it can create up to 10 back up files in an afternoon. Guest
Are you using OS 10.4.1 or 10.4.11? Which build of VW 2008 are you using? Quote Link to comment
BINM
not sure who the question is to? but I am using OS 10.4.11 and VW08 build 82613 Quote Link to comment
BINM
The backup problem is now happening to several people in the office. VW08 also seems to be crashing alot for some people. Quote Link to comment
Guest
The best thing to do in this situation is to contact Tech Support. You'll probably resolve the issue quicker going directly though Tech Support. This forum is more for discussing topics, rather than using as a tech support replacement. Quote Link to comment
BINM
I think I've figured out the reason VW cannot back up. Our file names typically contain a 4-digit job number-drawing type ref. - drawing number and revision number . eg. 0244-AA-001-B. When VW backs up the file it amends the file name to include 'backup-20080116142804'. (i.e a back up created on the 16/01/2008 at 14h28m04sec!) Obviously this makes the file name far too long and it cannot be saved to the server. When I made files simply called 'PLANS' for example, the backup worked perfectly. I've looked in the autosave preferences, but cannot find a way to amend how the file is named when backed-up. Is there a patch for this, I dont see our drawing numbering system being changed to suit VW.... Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
How about a different solution. Point the backup folder to someplace on the local disk instead of the network? You will still get the benefit of having a backup, but without having to worry about network bandwidth or file name restrictions. Pat Quote Link to comment
BINM
well, I'd rather keep with the system as we have it. The backup files are saved to the server which is backed up in turn. Most offices must have drawing naming procedures that are similar, we can hardly be the only place. Plus most places would have drawing filing and back up systems like us. I'd rather VW at least would allow you to define what way the back up files are named. Quote Link to comment
