mattfox
Hi. I have an existing building with a series for porthole windows that have a splay to the reveal. I can multiple extrude to create the splay, but don't want to subtract from the wall as this will turn the wall into a solid subtraction. I cannot see how to form a splay in the wall. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Matt Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
Create a symbol that includes the multiple extrude in the Wall Hole Component then insert it in the wall. Just include a 3D locus as the 3D component. Add geometry to the 2D component based on what you want to see in Top/Plan. Make sure symbol has 'Insert in Walls' enabled. 3 Quote Link to comment
mattfox
Ahh. Thanks Tom. Good thinking. I'd not thought to do this... Very helpful. Matt Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
Yes, and in addition to Tom's suggestion, another approach without the need to create a symbol, is to utilize the option to 'create wall recess' in the AEC Menu options. It too does a pretty Nice job 🙂 1 Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
Ok, I forgot to mention, I created a tapered extrude instead of a multiple extrude...the shaded rendering option seemed to like that better 🙂 1 Quote Link to comment
mattfox
Thank you Kevin. I agree the rendered output from multiple extrude looks more faceted. Great to hear of two methods to solve this issue. Matt Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
Actually @mattfox you asked about subtracting from the wall which is why I suggested a Wall Hole Cutter symbol but thinking about it this is probably best done as a circular Window object with Wall Closures: 4 Quote Link to comment
Kevin K
Tom, that is a great solution for @mattfox since I am pretty sure he will need to have some glass within that opening. Could you post a small file showing how you configured that opening etc. ?? 1 Quote Link to comment

Kevin K
Thanks Tom. I was thinking that this may be helpful to @mattfox to see the master at work 🙂 2 Quote Link to comment
mattfox
Perfect. Thank you both. I've just tried the Wall Closures as a trial and this seems to work very well indeed. Good to know there are multiple ways of doing this. Much appreciated. Matt Quote Link to comment
