kevin.hayward
I have a main venue file (with all the power and distribution) plus several referenced files for smaller areas. Think main hall of a trade show with showy entrance zone, press conference, large exhibits etc. Because reasons, the project has to be done this way. The smaller areas have lights, truss, stage boxes and cables from stage boxes to lights. My question is, is it possible to directly connect a cable between a distro in THIS drawing to a distro/light/whatever in a referenced drawing? If not, what's the most efficient workflow to do so? Thank you. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee klinzey Posted November 21, 2023 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 21, 2023 It's not possible. As part of the connection we have to write data to the object that would be in the referenced drawing. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee TomWhiteLight Posted November 22, 2023 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 22, 2023 Hi Kevin, Anything data dependent or connections dependant should ideal be in the same file, just geometry can be xreferenced in. is it all Vectorworks? Any of the XRef's Acad? Do multiple users need access to the same drawing? Quote Link to comment
kevin.hayward
It's all Vectorworks elements, no AutoCAD dwgs, but it is a series of VWXP files. Because, as I said, reasons... I can just create a 'dummy' stage box to connect the distros to the truss. All the truss specific distros/cabling is in the referenced file. 1 Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee TomWhiteLight Posted November 22, 2023 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 22, 2023 Thats good that you have a workaround. If it is a project sharing file I would recommend not X-refing files into that. If other prople need to add and take away stuff then they should have access to the VWXP file to create their own vwxw file. In terms of referencing a vwxp file into a vwx file, I have never done this (did not know it was possible) and would be concerned that with multiple users updating the file that it would always be out of date. kevin.hayward
Well... it was definitely on the "Would be nice" list. And it's a VWXP referencing other VWXP files. Why risk mucking things up, when you can risk royally mucking things up? 😁 1 Quote Link to comment
