Any way to read out the design layer order number?

Is there any way to read out the order number for design layers as can be seen in the navigation palette or the organization dialog?

I looked through the dev wiki, but couldn't find any VS command.

Are you looking for something that gives you the order of the layers dependent on what you have these sorted by?
The Nav Palette and Org Dialog don't appear to be in sync, so the displayed order could be different between them.
 

I don't think there's a way to pull what these dialogs are sorted by, but you can create a script based on stacking order or sort them alphabetically/by other value

I believe that those design layer numbers represent stacking order, not a record value attached to the design layer. 
 

At least that seems to be the behavior.

I wanted to use the number in a text object. But we found a different approach, that doesn't require scripts.
