Editing a viewport while showing the class overrides?

Is there a way of editing (going into the design layers) a viewport while showing the class overrides (ex.: as shown below)?

Right click on the viewport and select Edit from the menu. Check the Display Using Viewport Attributes check box and the Design Layer radio button. Click OK.

That's what I have and it doesn't work. It reverts to the original class settings: the existing doors have a red class, and they do show when editing the design layer.
