  1. this should be simple, but I can't figure it out. I want to 3D model a roadway curb and gutter profile, and the curb goes up and down a hill, while curving horizontally. If I make a NURBS or 2D section profile for the L-shaped curb/gutter and extrude along a NURBS path, the sction gets twisted as it goes up and down. If the road were perfectly horizontal everything would be OK, but with the Z dimension in play, the section twists such that the gutter pan is longer horizontal. This is obvious if you exagerate the vertical dimen, but still introduces small errors when using with normal parameters. Any suggestions ?
  2. I'm very sad that I can't really use VW 12.0.1 yet because it can't render the areas around the windows correctly in RW. Also, the dialog box for detailing windows is so big it takes up my whole screen (almost). And I hope VW looks into this major irritation... when I change a window detail (sill, jambs, trim, etc...) with every change the screen has to redraw the RW image. This is very time consuming.... unless I always remember to switch into wireframe before looking at windows. Please see if the window dialog could have a box that says "don't re-render on every change" (until you click "done"). If anyone has good "work-arounds" I'm ready to read it. Another idea... show the window "preview" box in 3D isometric so we could really preview the changes better than the 2D view we have now.
  3. jonas mac .... in my field as the owner's rep (client), the Architects I deal with always blame the doors hitting the lights as the contractor's failure to coordinate the work..... Also .. Robert.... I see drawings from about 4-5 different Architect's per year, and I don't recall any of them ever showing the door swings on the reflected ceiling plans.... but anyway.... I think VW is a fine product and I recommend it to others.... (but I don't tell them about the problems menitioned above.... and by the way, the current bug in VW 12.0.1 with the windows/door trim not rendering the wall properly is a big deal for me.... I show my 3D images/movies to many who are impressed.... but I can't impress them now. Looking forward to a fix in VW 12.5
  4. I presume you already noticed that the distortion is related to the trim size.... bigger trim on interior than exterior, yields distortion on exterior (using RW Final Qual) VW 12.0.1 Windows XP (I am also one of the disappointed ones )
  5. I often make 3D VW models (houses), then export a Quicktime animation (usually an exterior "orbit"). I have never been able to solve this problem: if I use QT pro to piece together different clips, I have much trouble with different size movies (pixel width x height) and different frame rates and compressors, but the biggest problem is that I can't generate a QT movie that is detailed and yet big enough to show on a projector or TV. The reason is that my computer (or any computer) can't play the bigger movies at full size smoothly.... it gets choppy and misses frames. I am trying iMoive to change it to digital video and that solves the speed problem, but the images/movies from iMovie lose resolution and generally look bad. I've been experimenting for a long time, and never found the choice of QT compressors to solve this. Please don't tell me to make sure I'm not looking at the iMovie "preview" pane ... that is what everyone has suggested. I love iMovie but can't get it to make my VW models look good. Any suggestions? (I used both VW 11 Windows and VW 10 Mac OS 10.3.8 and use iMovie HD ... the HD part doesn't make any difference from the preivous older versions)
  6. I can't find any mention of VW 12 support for the future new MACs using Intel CPUs. Could Tech support answer: does VW 12 support MAc OS on Intel CPUs? If not (as I suspect), can you state a policy or timeframe for such support of the next release (VW 12.5 or 13?) Also, does VW 12 support use of multiprocessor core CPUs as installed on the current (new) G5 PowerPC chips? Also: some statement on the rendering speed of VW 12 would be nice... even if you just state that it is about the same..... don't leave us guessing and counting on other poster's remarks.
  7. thanks ... but ....the thread you listed gave a response from June and said they would update us. I'm looking for the update ... now that it is 5 months later..... and I suspect Apple will announce an Intel machine at Macworld in January .... and I may hold off on VW 12 until Apple's new CPU arrives.
  8. Does anyone know how to change the resolution of a QT panorama? I tried resetting the export resolution pref and changing the size of the window when exporting the QT pan, but neither had any affect. Also: Nemetschek.... can you post an instruction manual on the QT panorama feature? It isn't in your manual nor in the on line help.
  9. I use a 64M flash drive to move files between a MAC OS9 beige g3 desktop, a G3 powerbook in OS X and a Dell PC Pentium IV all the time and never noticed any of the problems mentioned above. I have VW 10 at home on Mac and VW 11 Windows on my work PC .... again.... never noticed any problems ..... just lucky I guess.
  10. I successfully made a QT VR panorama and was impressed. However, I can?t figure out how to change the resolution of the panorama image. I tried the preferences export option dialog and I tried to increase the screen size of the image before selecting the menu item to export QT panorama. I am very disappointed that this feature is not in any of the manuals and can?t find instructions on the VW tech support website. Please help. Nemetschek: please consider adding a section in your ?tutorials? section. VW 11, Windows XP
  11. I agree ... I use both OSs and VW seems about the same but I prefer Mac because the tool palettes are easier to minimize/maximize than in Win XP. I seem to have greater printing problems on the Win XP version but it might be related to printer software. I also agree on speed ... my mac is slower, but for 2D work it doesn't matter. For 3D work and renderings, speed is everything (and no machine is fast enough). Mac OSX VW 10.5 G4 12" 880MHz laptop Win XP VW 11.1 Pent IV 2.88GHz
  12. I've done several animated orbits and fly-byes, and I often find the data rate is too fast for my computer (or other computers) to play smoothly. I know how to slow it down, but I wonder about this: Is there a way to make a QT animation, then transfer it to a DVD format and disc, and then play it on any DVD player at full size / smooth speed ? (my problem is not platform dependant, I have both a Mac powerbook 877MHz and a Pentium 4 2.80 GHz, VW/RW 11.1 on the pentium.)
  13. I wish VW would have a tool that can take the 2D layout of parking spaces and turn them into 3D lines or 3" wide paint stripes that could be put on a landscape or even just a flat plane. Ideally, it would be nice to have a 2D representation with the normal lines, then when the view is switched to 3D, the single lines become 3D paint stripes for each parking space .... good for 3D models and fly-byes.
  14. yes ... before you use the stamp tool, go to it's preferences box (upper left corner of work area) and reset the size of the box. After you do it once, all the following boxes will be that size. My text boxes all accept 3 digits or more with the number stamp tool (VW 11, Windows and Mac)

I do not consider myself an expert, but I've done several animations using Quicktime and I am frequently annoyed by inconsistant results.... some I'm sure are operator error. 75% it works great, but the other 25% something unexplained will mess things up. I am not smart enough to figure out why. Suggest you try again. I can't solve your problem, but I can commisserate.
  16. Hey Katie.... this "non-feature" about not being able to view the active wall type is a big pain for me .... and I think probably for others. Can you see if your software gurus can change this in the future?
  17. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial on using Renderworks 10.5? I've found the manual is way too elementary and does not cover the details. Specifically, I can't find instruction on how to get the shaders/textures to reflect light correctly. When editing textures, there are a lot of terms that are not in the manual and I still can't figure what "phong" is. PS: Nemetshek... in my opinion your time is best spent on making everything work well and writing good, detailed manuals (even if you would just post them on the website it would help). There are already more features than I can figure out how to use, but an exhaustive texture library and more prop objects would be a big help.
  18. I’ve been reading about the Mac OS X speed issues with great interest. I intend to upgrade both my computer and VW. Currently using VW/RW 8.5 and Mac OS 8.6. Can anyone tell me: 1) Is VW/RW ver 10 faster using Mac OS 8.6 than it is in Mac OS X? 2) Will the new Powerbook G4 12” (or 17”) run OS 9.2 or lower? 3) Should I expect the same speed in VW using Mac OS 9.2 as I would using the “classic” mode in OS X? Thanks for your help / opinion.
  19. I use VW 8.5.2 on a Macintosh and can not buy a compatible version of RenderWorks. Nemetschek doesn't have RW ver 8, nor does anybody else (including Ebay where I've been searching for months). Would anyone please consider selling me their old copy? I already called Nemetschek and they said there is no problem with license transferal, and you can still upgrade if needed. I dont' want to upgrade because I only do a couple houses a year. Please respond with Email to rocket1322@yahoo.com
  20. Please help me.... I'm a part time VW user and want to buy RenderWorks version 8 to go with my VW 8.5.2 but can't find any store or place to buy it from. I called Nemetschek, they said they don't sell it anymore, then referred me to distributors who don't sell it. Can't find it on ebay either. I don't want to upgrade to VW and RW version 9. I understand RW 9 will not work on VW ver 8.5.2. I use a Macintosh sys 8.6 and would be willing to buy a RW version 8 from anyone. If interested, send an email to me at rocket1322@yahoo.com
