Now would it be possible for you to outline the system.

    Hello Elepp,

we have a system which doesn't require particular skills and certainly no dedicated person. I consider it highly efficient and scalable, given the circumstances. We use it for every project, from small to large.

My interest is also peaked. 🙂 But I have no doubt about its efficiency. I have seen some of your work and I also had the good fortune talking to you once on the phone about it. A mutual friend here in Hamburg set it up 😉

  2. The length to which a bigger office has to go, can be quiet nicely seen in one of the webinars from this year. The office showed their file and referncing strategy . The complexity shown was something else. Very sophisticated. And one person only busy with the maintenance of all these references. That was not necessarly a presentation in Vectorworks favor. I do admire though their dedication. If I find the video and will link it.

Architosh has an article up on new features in the mid-year release of Archicad, which now includes the Unreal Engine Datasmith Export as well. I had assumed this item on the Roadmap was related to the Direct Link with Twinmotion, without saying so much. But that's not so clear now, given Archicad has had a Direct Link for quite some time without it and because Twinmotion is not specifically mentioned. Epic was said to be the holdup in the other thread . . .

Is it right to assume that the "Datasmith Export" and the TM Link are related or one and the same? Due perhaps, to Epic unifying their exchange format?

Seeing though some of their released features now to what is in the pipe line at VW, I get the feeling we are just trying to get feature parity. And even that will take some time. 😒

  4. Shapr3D is showing the way in my opinion. The advantage it has compared to other tools is, that it started on an iPad. The restrictions of the smaller screen real estate leads to fewer obstrusive menu bars and dialogs. Developers for macOS/ windows can learn a thing or two there.

Are you making VW more direct? Less dialogs? Less interface scattering?

We are left alone with daily work with often cryptical tools that never, ever work as we need them to.

Please do finish what you begin, and really do

Very much that. Compared to the majority of competitors we spend to much time in some clunky dialog instead of drawing our plans. (Adding a door to walls should not depend on me knowing already how big the door is. Windows are the same.)

He does some nice articles on building Lego 'BIM' models.

Yeah. His series about BIM explained with Lego Bricks is a good starting point for newbies in this field.

Here in Germany Architects seem to be all over the place in terms of BIM software. The very big ones mostly use Revit. But they also rely heavily on third party plugins to make it complient with german standards. Which adds additional cost to the already high price of Revit.

  7. I agree. We also had a project once where the consultant to our client demanded Revit-files, because their whole system was setup that way. Very annoying.

I also only heard bad things about their ifc capabilities. Though I have found some useful informationen about ifc on a blog of revit users of all places: https://bimblog.bondbryan.co.uk/ifc-industry-foundation-classes-layers-and-classification-in-autodesk-revit/

  8. That sounds like an interesting idea. Is it possible to extract the fire rating of slab, walls and roofs at the same time? They all have a pset for this. Or extracting the name at once, because they all have this as a set. Maybe with a wildcard similar to worksheets: *.firerating. 🤔

  9. I might be mistaken, but I thought the international Version also has the option to import mtextur ressources. It's a swiss website that provides quite a lot of textures. It should be part of the many import options.

  10. Hi,

since a while we can push our files into the cloud to have our pdfs published automatically. Or we can use it as a render farm. My wish is to have the possibility in a future update to do the same with our ifc files. after some time our files can get large and the ifc export might take some time. Being able to push a file into the cloud to have this process handled in the background would be a time saver.

    Thanks!

Revit does it for example as well

As far as I remember Revit is "serverless" and works like Vectorworks. One Projectfile on the server and everyone creates a workfile, that is saved locally.

Edit: Sorry. Just saw that Revit now supports both. File based and server based.

  12. For me a live dialog box underneath it would be nice, so you see the whole formula at once and you could make your adjustments there as well. One of our biggest issues is, when you have lots of criteria and you would like to remove one from the middle. So far you always had to delete it from the bottom up. The other issue was if you edited the dialog in the formula bar and you went back to this dialog and just pressed ok, the formula was overwritten and a | was replaced with a &, or viceversa. Frustrating.

I think the way it's handled in the data manager could be a way to go. Especially because the interfaces would be similar and people would be used to the way it works in both situations.

Which version of VW are you using?

VW Architect 2020 SP5 (German version)

How do you enter the height, when you change it manually?

We place the data tag and type in the value. It's not a smart tag, that automatically pulls the data

Have you noticed after what action does the height reset back to the default value?

That's the point where I am also a bit at a loss. I can't reproduce it either. My colleagues are not regularly checking on the tags, but after a while they notice this behaviour. But they can't tell me all the steps they did before. It happens often enough though that at least 10 colleagues noticed it seperatly from each other.

  14. Hi,

We are experiencing an issue with our data tags. Maybe @Nikolay Zhelyazkov could help us here. We have a data tags for displaying the height of objects in our plans. The tag is setup that it displays a standard value of +1.00m and upon insertion my colleagues change the value manually. Now it happnes regularly that it reverts back to +1.00m. I can not pinpoint what is causing it. But it happens very often and everyone is very frustrated with it. They started to explode them now into groups for a lack of better options. I've attached a .vwx with our tags.

    Best regards!

    @line-weightVery creative 🙂

I have been paying attention to the forums, it that just sometimes I don't have all the answers.
As I mentioned in previous posts and Biplab and Steve mentioned during the live Q&A at Design Day, we plan to release our roadmap of features and improvements for version 2022 before the end of the year and later on Q1-2021 one more that will include our 2 to 5 years roadmap.
We have been collecting all your feedback, and we are aware of the importance of updating Windows, doors, and stairs. I will be providing more information as becomes available.

Hi, thanks for the update. Very much appreciated. I can imagine that it can be a bit frustrating also for you guys at VW Inc. with us complaining in the forum. But at least for myself I can say that it comes from a place of appreciation for the work you all put in. Sometimes I have the feeling we are in a relationship with VW Inc. and we are considering if we should head for couple counseling.

  16. The latest TRXL Podcast with guest Dane Stokes had a good remark about Revit that would also apply to Vectorworks. He mentioned that in the university they had to delete their projects and draw them from scratch again. The result were better designs, because the initial problems were solved. Autodesk should have deleted the old Revit code and written everything anew. Maybe the same should apply to Vectorworks. 🤔 It's basically the same issues plaguing us architects with our design. In Germany we say: "Hinterher ist man immer schlauer" or in English "Hindsight is always 20/20".
