  1. Ok. Big rant and massive plead for help. File started to get large and then something unusual happened, which I've flagged long ago but still hasn't been addressed. Normals are reversed on geometry, making the hidden line VPs look rediculous. Performance dropped massively after replacing the symbols and trying to bug hunt. Had rediculous amounts of clipping of gfx in 3d views. Near and far geometry not displaying, zoom in a bit too far (like 50m away) and everything vanishes. Tried all the gfx compatibility options before I began running out of time. Performance kept dropping, tried everything I knew before resorting to heavy measures. Removed vw preferences, as explained in previous posts... And it's asked me to re-enter the serial number. They're not held on this site or on the machines unfortunately. It stops people pinching serials. Logged into VSS to get my VW designer 2017 serial, and it's not available as I don't have prividges as I chose not to update my VSS due to too many problems with the software. UK support only open in office hours. can't use a trial version of 2018, as I don't want to be locked into upgrading when the problem is resolved, and I don't have access to my software now. Skyping into Middle East at 4am to present months of work to the board of directors and I'm utterly screwed. Lost 6 hours today, will lose the job altogether in the morning.... and have been working on it since January all in the run up to this date. Why I'm cross? I flagged flipped normals ages ago. not fixed I flagged VSS not showing older licence numbers ages ago. not fixed I paid a lot of money for software which still doesn't work. I'm about to lose a contract worth 7 figures and I will get sued by my client. not able to discover my serial online, in files, in registery or anything, and I'm very savvy in that respect.
  2. wouldn't that be more down to the 3d conversion res? not the page res? Just trying to understand the process a little more.
  3. Will it be rolled out in the final SP for 2017?
  4. Hi, I've had an issue with title blocks and Issue managers. When I add an Issue note, normally it's multiple lines long, and therefore the Issue number and date is in one column, and then the write up is in the next one. Great for one issue... When I add more issue notes, the numbers and dates are stacked on top of one another at the bottom of the block, and do not relate to the issue they're next to. I can post screen grabs if that helps. Is there a fix or workaround?
  5. Any news on the last SP for 2017? I gather, by previous years that December is looking most likely. For those of us who didn't VSS upwards, we're still dealing with issues that have been outstanding for over a year. Drawing number co-ordination, structural member tool etc. Wondering if there's a list of fixes in the pipeline. Not getting on at you I've just been thinking about it.
  6. I agree completely. One of the trick that I use with 3ds max is to have a master texture map, and then tweak the individual settings. So if I have, say, 5 of one item in a row they look like clones of each other, but nudge the bump map on each one, and tweak the individual reflectivity and glossiness settings, et voila, you now have 5 different versions of the same item. Looks much more natural. Still looking to see RW have a more fluid workflow before I migrate my rendering into VW.

    Undo issues

It does happen in 2017 also, fairly rare, but does happen. I'm on PC with VW Designer
  8. Hi all, This happens quite frequently and I don't know how to repair it. The upper viewport is front view, the lower one is Iso, both hidden line. Top one missing a lot of lines. 2017 designer, win 8.1, Nvidia GPU Any advice very welcome
  9. Since they brought point cloud support in, yes, it works extremely well. I did a talk through for some friends last year; but I do babble on (ignore the first 5 minutes or so) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E4N2u_2RWU&t=555s And an example point cloud is here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4LbOLUkOgk My friends farm is about a mile long, and half a mile wide, and was scanned in 3 flights, over 45 minutes, and the whole vally consists of around 60 million points Be very careful about operating inside the law though. UAV operators are getting some bad press at the moment.
  10. Tricky to answer. You generally need to optimise the mesh a bit, meshlabs and 3ds max are good for this. Also the UVW maps can be absolutely bonkers, unless you do an unfold operation before This was done with a 50mpix canon last year But also.... Capturing reality has a great free trial version you can play with. Obv, the higher the image quality, the better the finished article. The vid above was done in Agisoft Photoscan. https://www.capturingreality.com/ HTH
  11. Ah, ok. That makes perfect sense. Thanks very much
  12. Just doing a little polite chase up on this. Traditionally the last SP has come out 10 days or so before the new release, so just a-wondering... I did the whole "duplicate sheet" thing again and then spent 10 minutes opening up each title block and closing it to update the sheet name... and then going through each viewport and renumbering them corectly. Still looking forward to Uk UCs appearing in the structural member tool too. I'm sure the Dev team are busy as anything with the new release. I'm itching to see how 2017 will be left for us who didn't VSS our way up on this occasion.
  13. I just got piled into reading the section about Braceworks! What a great development... Very much nearly pushed me into renewing my VSS instantly Then I noticed it had a B icon, like the L S A D ones for the design series products. Turns out it's not included in the Designer package and is around $5.5k to add it on. Having looked through the full feature list of 2018, other than the multiple views which look nice, I don't think I would have used any "new" features in my workflow. The only ones I think I'm going to miss out on are the "new" features which are improvements or fixes to old, broken ones. Line rendering on sheets, wall component joins, streamlined worksheets. I think I would enjoy the new title block feature, but only because it would have saved me a lot of time checking the drawing number co-ordination from the exising broken one (duplicate sheets do not update thier numbers and so on) There must be a killer feature I've missed that I can't live without, surely? I have noticed I no longer have access to the subscription libraries and the what's new videos in VSS. Only to be expected I guess.
  14. Great, thank you. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.
  15. In previous years there's always been a last SP to iron out the last remaining bugs and provide future compatibility just before a new release is rolled out. I know that it's been usual to have SP5 for all but 2016, which went to SP6. There's still quite a few issues for us that have chosen to remain on 2017
  16. Just read through the what's new on the 2018 help pages. Interesting stuff. Lets see how people lever these new tools
  17. Hi VW folks. I've had to use a sketchup file to communicate with a client lately and it dawned on me that they're using the free version. There's quite a few free but restricted versions of software out there, which although they protect themselves via watermarking and other methods and advertise themselves, they end up providing their users with a potential to build a library of their own free design files, so when they want to "go pro" they invest in the pro version of that software. Is it feasible that VW release a hugely cut down, very simple and free version of VW? My clients love the VW viewer, but wish they could put basic cubes and lines on the modelling space to help mark up feedback. So, disabling sheets, having either a 3d or 2d file and no custom PIOs, ni rendering etc... could be a fantastic way of doing an entry level version of the software which, no doubt, would increase customer uptake later on down the line. MacDonalds have their happy meals for exactly that purpose. Get them familiar with the product when they're poor, and then watch them come on board later when they're spenders. I would certainly recomend a free VW "viewer" with super-basic facilities to my clients to give some feedback Thoughts anyone??
  18. While underwhelming on first look, this is, in my humble opinion probably one of the most solid future-proofing moves I've seen. not immediately obvious, but using it in anger will probably yield gains straight away. good idea!
  19. Hi Folks. I'm a nerd, and I like photography, and a friend and I do monthly, live broadcast webinars about Tilt/shift, focal length and so on, (with the option to view online after too) It's not too hard to setup, and my friend often has guests on each month to talk about their stuff for an hour. I would LOVE to see VW do something like this. I'm very interested in so many things, like Marrionette and Lighting tools, but until some one shows you the way, it's tricky to start. What do we say folks? I know I'd do a stint or two to share what I know... Who else might be up for it? If VW are too stretched, we as users could put something together?? (We do it live, so it cuts out the post production and it's a lot more fun too!) Thoughts?

    Big undo issue.

No I didn't use the eyedropper, but I made heavy use of the visability tool. set to layers, hide. I'm not too alarmed as it's a rare issue... but knowing it's there is a little worry. After you save a file, you then get the vwbackup folder... is there any facility for untitled/unsaved docs? (I'm not expecting there to be, but worth the ask) Note to self.... save file before working.

    Big undo issue.

This was a huge amount of steps, without the ability to redo. Like I said though, first time I've ever come across it. Interestingly, all of the symbols dragged in have vanished from the RM too... seems like the whole thing reverted to a position where it might have tried an autosave (but with no saved file it didn't do that...) I might be wrong there though
  22. Hi everyone. This is the first time ever this has happened, so I wouldn't know how to replicate it. I very quickly knocked up a file with existing symbols, just snapping them together, many layers, many classes.... Then I hit the undo button and the file went back to a state that was some 15 minutes before!!! Redo didn't do any thing, and all the new classes and layers vanished, back to only 2 or three. It was a new file and I hadn't saved it yet... Has anyone else experienced this?
  23. Why does the V always take precedence...? Give the W a go... lets have some fun... I tend to put the V icon next to Word, to get the VW. It looks nice next to Indesign, to make Vid, And next to Adobe Animate it makes Van! I did have Adobe Character animator, MS access and VW in a row to spell "Chav" in nice rainbow colours... Sigh.... I wish I had more friends and the phone rang more often.... Far too much time on my hands...
