  1. @Pat Stanford thank you, that's very kind of you. I'm not near my computer just now, but I'll try it tomorrow when I am. The class naming is pretty consistent I think - what might cause complications is that sometimes the date has a ? and sometimes they are something like 1870.6 rather than 1870.
  2. Yes I just turned off the nesting to make the screenshot - they are nested in the normal way using the standard dash.
  3. By the way... I think there is something wrong with the "open street maps" option - see the misalignment of the river, compared with the ArcGIS image:
  4. Yes, using that same "select service" dialogue as your screenshot, but accessed from the "edit service" button in the Geoimage OIP. This is the one I managed to add a while ago (and still seems to work). It's a WMS connection though which I think is a different thing to an XYZ map tile connection.
  5. At this URL: https://geo.nls.uk/maps/os/1250_B_1eng/index.html#1250_B_1engN/ol3 You can see a georeferenced historic map layer (supplied by National Library of Scotland). I can get this layer pulled directly into QGIS (a GIS mapping application) by clicking on XYZ in the top right - this brings up a box which gives me a URL. That URL is https://geo.nls.uk/maps/os/1250_B_1eng/{z}/{x}/{y}.png In QGIS I can make a new "XYZ tile" connection, give it that URL and it's pulled directly into the application as a layer I can use. Can I do the same using VW's Geoimage tool and therefore get these georeferenced maps directly into Vectorworks without needing to go through intermediate steps? I think at some point in the past I managed it to use a WMS connection but I don't think that's available for this source. Sorry if I am using some of that terminology inaccurately...am a bit new to all this GIS stuff, although I have started to understand how it works by messing with the QGIS application.
  6. I think the geoimage tool needs to be made more user friendly. I shouldn't have to be reading these messages half the time I try and use it - I have just about worked out how to get it to give me what I want, but it's rather painful. Contrary to what I think most people would assume, when that message appears it's usually not because the server is unresponsive - it's because of issues at the VW end. It's unclear exactly what the "resolution" setting is doing and I end up using trial and error to get the best image. I think it sometimes actually downloads an image which has a higher resolution than the source, giving me some kind of interpolated result with more pixels than is necessary. I ought to be able just to draw my rectangle, tell it to give me the image at the best resolution available from the source (which I think is what people will most commonly be after) and be done with it.
  7. Yeah, I do try and make sure I keep free space on my boot drive, which isn't enormous at 256GB. I think the issue is that even if I keep 10% of that free (25GB), VW2025 will happily chew it all up as swap space and then I start getting the "run out of application memory" alerts. Sometimes I can't even do a "save as" operation. Just now I have about 45GB free on my boot drive (or I did before opening VW) and I am waiting to see how much VW ends up using. So far today it has got to 22GB, according to Activity Monitor. I have been running one of those RAM monitoring apps - but I don't think they can do anything about what is being put into swap memory - I can press the button in the app that recycles memory but as far as I can see, what happens it frees up a small amount in RAM (which then gets filled up again almost immediately) but it has no effect on the amount of swap memory being used.
  8. Yeah I too am hoping @Pat Stanford might be having a slow day and looking for some entertainment. It seems odd that the data manager works in such a way that you can only add one class at a time, if the whole point of it is to allow bulk editing.
  9. Ok, I can see that I can put object classes in the left hand pane, and then the middle pane lets me add data sets to all those objects. However, as far as I can see I need to add each class individually to that left hand pane. I've got something like 500 classes so I'm not sure this would be practical, unless there is a way of putting all those classes in there in one go? Also this bit: If I can set up a rule ("expert formula"?) that is then applied to every object then this works, but again if I have to do it individually, for each of the 500 classes, then it's not practical unfortunately.
  10. Ah, thanks - I have never used the Data Manager. I'll have a look at it.
  11. Returning to this question 5 years after I started the thread... Various improvements to DV (ability to apply multiple DVs and the ability to properly "hide" objects) mean that basically I can now do what I want to do using Data Visualisation. And I have one file where that is basically working ok. However.... I have an older file which I set up before these DV improvements where all the visibilities are controlled by a rather clunky class-based system. I'd quite like to convert that file to using DV instead but it's very large (there are several hundred individual classes, let alone number of objects) so adding Record Formats to every object manually is a non starter. The class names have this format: **buildings-streetname-streetnumbers-XXXX>YYYY in each case XXXX is the date of construction; YYYY is the date of demolition Like this: Therefore I am wondering if there's any way to either (A) use some kind of script to add record formats to every object based on what class it's in It would need to add a record format with two fields (construction date and demolition date) to every object, then look at the object's class name and put XXXX in the first field and YYYY in the second field. (B) make DVs that can act on objects based on the contents of their class name. I'd need to make a DV that would look at each object's class name and hide it if XXXX was higher than a given value A, and YYYY was lower than a given value A I don't think DV is able to do what I describe in (B) - correct me if I'm wrong - but is (A) scriptable? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
  12. The message I am frequently getting while using VW2025 (on MacOS Sequoia) is "Your system has run out of application memory" I'm a little unclear whether this is a RAM problem or a lack of space on my HD (or both).
  13. Is it eating memory on your HD or in RAM?
  14. I'm a fan of what can be done just with push-pull and taper face tools. Screen Recording 2025-03-26 at 11.53.39.mov
  15. Have added my alternative solution (vwx file attachd) - means setting the "gap line" length to 1, and changing the line length would mean editing the marker layouts, but it does allow that separator line to be kept. Custom Section Marker_2.vwx
  16. I'd try making the smaller symbol with the filled rectangle you've got but plus a short section of dummy "line", in such a way that it measured the same width as the symbol on the other end. As @markdd says you might find there are issues when it's rotated though. By the way it's really confusing that VW calls this the "gap line length". It makes it sound like you are setting the size of a gap. I wonder how many users only ever figure out what it does by trial and error.
  17. I have quite a few workflows where things are set up to look OK in Shaded, and then I have Renderworks viewports where various textures are substituted out, either via data vis or class overrides. Is that sort of thing reasonably possible in enscape? (I know, I should just get around to trying it out myself at some point).
  18. It applies globally (per viewport) but I have been requesting more granular control for a while now! Ideally it would let you choose per object or object type but at the moment that's not possible so it's all or nothing.
  19. You can show the 2d portion of doors/windows if you want. There is a setting for HSVPs that lets you choose whether to display the 2d symbols, or the "physical" section through such objects.
  20. The alternative is to use Horizontal Section Viewports instead of Top/Plan view. That is an alternative workflow that means you don't have to mess around making autohybrids - everything gets drawn according to its real geometry. Whether this is something worth you considering, depends on what kind of projects you work on. If you use a lot of custom-made 3d geometry, I recommend considering it.
  21. What texture are you using for them? Texture transparency should work in shaded view.
  22. I'm interested in comments about Enscape too. @rmorris6 how do textures work when switching back and forth to Enscape? Do you replace VW textures with native Enscape ones? Is that a fiddly process?
  23. An improvement to the worksheet UI would be hugely welcome. It's so painful even making quite basic schedules at the moment - and I often end up doing them outside VW for that reason (plus the pagination problem).
  24. Haven't really got time to test fully right now, but the button mappings seem to at least mostly work. I barely use them in practice though.
  25. I have 3dxware 10.7.0 and a space mouse pro, and haven't updated to latest driver for fear of breaking something. I only ever use helicopter mode, so it doesn't really affect me, but looking just now, it seems that I can't change to another mode (it used to be that one of the buttons would switch modes).
