  1. It was only a test its not usually something I do. In fact I go the opposite way and back which may seem a bit odd but generally it works. So the object I want to texture I export to C4D, then I unwrap it and texture it and then send it back to VW. There is a need for the work to be completed in VW. It would be nice to be able to Send to C4D > Map and texture > In VW associate the original object with the UV Map created in C4D (set map type to imported and then navigate to the UV map). Honestly I can't see why this cannot be done as currently the imported OBJ has access to the UV Map currently. Think of C4D as an external mapping tool.
  2. The material size is interesting. I thought there was a way around this so I mapped the material in C4D then imported the .OBJ into VW 'assuming' that the texture size would be set fine. It is for the imported OBJ and carries a Map Type of imported. Unfortunately you cannot then use the material on other objects at the correct texture size as it will carry a default size of 10 and then you are back into the same situation as importing the texture directly
  3. The students are at Uni for 3-years and each new academic year starts late September. This is awful timing for us as the new release has just or is just coming out. We can't take a chance and use it as once its deployed we are locked in for a year. ICT deploy an image and that's it for 1-year. It sounds bad but in all honesty there are a few thousand macs/pcs and they are in use 24/7. So we have to take the previous year which in this case is 2017. We don't want to burden students with having to learn VW latest version each time they come back from Summer leave so we have a 2-year upgrade cycle. For whatever reason we missed a year this time (the whatever reason was laughable but another story) and the students are now 'shuttling' between 2015 and 2017. Therefore we have OMG what is that resource browser! I haven't taught it as we have 2015. Last night we had the mirror texture is broken. All in a days work I support around 120 students on my own at any one time and as we are Edu users we don't get external support, certainly not in the UK and that has been made clear to us. These boards are all I have and I can't tell you how much I thank everyone for their help everyday I wake up
  4. Fair enough but I can fully understand my students confusion (and mine). We use 2015 at Uni and are moving to 2017 ready for the next academic year. In the meantime the students license expires (after 1 year and I have done that to death) and 2015 is no longer 'downloadable' so they have the situation of 2015 to 2017 and back if they have a copy on their own machines (everyone does). Hopefully you can see the issues that a 1-year license causes us. thanks
  5. Hi Jim if you go back to the first post then you can see the difference in the reflection.
  6. Thanks but it is still not the same strength reflection as 2015. Its much weaker in its reflectivity and if I take this file 'as is' and place it into 2015 then the stronger reflection is back so something is broken. Why change it if it was working fine? thanks
  7. Attached - thank you <edit> wrong file now changed mirror v2017.vwx
  8. Ah ok when you said default background I thought there was a way of getting at it. Anyhow no change. The issue I have here is that in 2017 the reflection is not as strong as 2015 and looks rather weak/washed out or that it has kind of a white film over it. I have no idea why it has changed in versions which leads me to believe it is a bug?
  9. Hi if I have a viewport on a sheet layer and a light in the scene and then choose to edit the light from the visualisation palette I get the properties dialogue. The Caustic Photons drop down is active but if I select any option other than None then it just reverts back to none again. thanks
  10. Thanks Zoomer/Luis great render btw. Did you make or import the chairs? thanks again
  11. In 2015 the shader setting is white and in 2017 it is white also (exactly the same) Not sure how I get at the default background colour in 2017?
  12. thanks for trying but in 2015 the extruded rectangle is white but more importantly the reflection is much stronger than in 2017 (see attached). I honestly think its borked in 2017 and the reflection is almost semi-transparent when you compare the two. thanks again
  13. Not sure if this is correct but it seems a bit 'off' with what should happen (at least in my head). In the images attached I have two planes which are 500m apart. If I set the AO size to 100 then there is no shadowing on the lower plane. I would expect this. If I then set the size to 1m I see shadowing. Once again I would expect this. Finally I set the AO size to 510mm and very little shadowing appears even though I would have expected it to be the same as the 1m test. Am I missing something here? thanks
  14. Ah ok its a bug (he says sticking his neck out) as I took the 2017 file and put it into 2015 and it worked fine.
  15. Thanks but no lighting here just the VW default and ambient. Everything is set up the same
  16. Not sure what has happened to the mirror texture option in 2017 but it does not work for me. Screenshots below. The first is 2015 and how I expect it to work and the second is 2017. All parameters are set the same in both. Could someone confirm this please? thank you
  17. Its worth noting that the default light has a direction which I believe is the top left as you look at your monitor. (happy to be corrected)
  18. For glow to work you need to have a light source in the scene even if that light source is turned off. I assume this is what he means. By adding the single light you are switching off the VW default light.
  19. Thank you That was my guess. Thank you Another good reason to clean up components when importing objects from SketchUp
  20. No idea why they do not translate other than it was missed somehow.
  21. I have a bunch of area lights in VW and I send them to C4D and I end up with a null (named correctly as I named it in the data tab in the OIP) and a NURBS surface as a child which has a material with a luminance channel. I would expect this if it was a glow texture in VW but an area light in VW should = an area light in C4D? Thanks
  22. Could you give the frames a key color and select in PS and then clean up?
  23. For me it's a case of more control and work on area lights. There is too much 'randomness' and not enough predictability currently which leads to more work which is evidenced by all of the great work that you have to put in on our behalf
