Grain Direction of Wood

Recommended Posts

Hi Eddie

you should also be aware of the differences in using a timber shader("birch", "cherry", "wood" etc), or an image shader. The timber shaders effectively create a "log" and the object is cut out of this log and will even show end-grain depending on the orientation. A lot of subtle effects are available with this shader, but the above method will not work to rotate the grain. Instead you have to click the mapping... button, select map type as "plane" and check the "show axis" box. The axis are then moved or rotated with the help of the buttons on the RHS of the diplay window and the zoom and pan controls below it. It's trial and error to ge the effect you want - a tip is that as you move the longitudinal axis away from the centre of the "log" you get larger patterns.

To put it simply, the process is a real pain in the neck, and I nearly always opt for an image shader, which can be simply rotated as above.
