10 VW Wishes

Question

I want to refresh my votes by my currently personal Top 10 of most annoying things in VW.

Please fix :

1.

Extrudes :

flipped Top Cap/Face of Extrudes

(So also Face Normals mess in Stair/Slab Geometry)

2.

RW C4D/FBX/DAE Exchange :

Unwanted Duplications/Ranaming of Materials.

When a Material is assigned to Elements or Classes, export and assign this Material only to all

Elements that have assigned that Material directly or by Classes. Use the Name of the Material

for Material Naming and don't add anything to it for readability.

Restrict Material Creation for Class Fills to only those Colors when same Colors assigned multiple

Times. (Maybe add Add an Option to assign one Default Material only)

If no Materials assigned, give an option to suppress Material Export completely.

Keep Names of Image Textures even in VW internally.

3.

RW C4D/FBX/DAE Exchange :

Add an Option to Group all Elements of a whole Class inside of each Layer.

If possible even an Option to export all those Elements into a single Mesh Item,

while keeping Vertices welded for each Object separately.

4.

Worflow :

Need of double-ENTER and double-ESC when there are no 2 steps to do.

5.

Workflow :

Inconsistency in need of -/+ in Numeric Translation Entries

(Move by Points doesn't need -, Drag or 3D Modify do need -)

6.

DWG/IFC :

Arbitrayry Scale and Position Issues or Geometry Loss in IFC and DWG Imports/Exports

although no additional scaling is visible/recognizable in VW OIP Element Properties.

(BTW Those problematic geometry can also cover Camera Views or Lights when Rendering in VW)

Loss for Export/Re-Import in general.

7.

DXF :

Missing Front+Back Faces of Window Frames

Missing Top and Bottom Faces of Slabs

Missing Top and Bottom Multi Extrudes

(Seen when exporting and re-importing or in imports in any other 3D App)

8.

Open Elements :

prevent Fills for non-closed Polygons and Polylines until closed

(BTW I miss a Multi-Line Tool instead + Auto Closed Polygons)

9.

3D Modify :

Missing "Lock to Selected" Element for 3D Modify Tool

10.

Move by Points :

Missing Continuos Mode for "Move by Points" Tool

(1st Click : from point, 2nd Click : to point, 3rd Click : to point 4th ....)

Preventing use of "Numbers of Copies" when in Move Mode

(I would prefer 2 separate Tools/Icons)

(and would therefore abandon on # 8.)

8. (new)

Meshes :

The selection behavior of Meshes,

deviating from all other elements, where crossing only parts of a Mesh Geometry

by selection marquee forces a selection of that mesh item.

Which makes selection of other parts impossible when any Mesh is near.

And deselecting Meshes with another Shift+Click is impossible too.

It needs at least 2 SHIFT+Clicks, if it works at all.

Current Top Ten :

1. Symbols :

Can't select Symbols by Click when set Classes to "Show snap others" only.

Marquee selection possible only.

2. Show/Hide Grid

Grid not visible in Top Plan as hidden by Slab Fillings !

3. Snapping

Snapping Problems when Placing Symbols. Snapping Hint Cubes not appearing

and Grid Snap unavailable. Restart necessary.

4. Slabs

Missing red section surfaces in OpenGL Clip Cube, just horizontal Surfaces.

(I can be happy that it works in section viewports)

5. Slabs

In Sub Edit Mode, no surrounding geometry visible (like in Symbol or other Sub Edit Modes)

Can neither see where to, nor snap to anything at all.

Partly Flipped Face Normals (Top or Bottom Cap).

7. C4D/FBX

Invisible Layers will not get exported. No option to export whole file.

8. C4D

Symbol Instances do not have assigned the Symbols (any) Class.

No Visibility control possible.

9. FBX

No Instancing of Symbols supported.

Exports as normal geometry, but unfortunately packs all these elements into a

Null Object / Locator Object which makes things meaningless complex and

hard to edit.

10. C4D/FBX

No Option to Export all Classes elements in one Mesh Item or at least put in a Group.

I suggest splitting these up, 1, 3, 4, and 6 seem like bugs or file issues to me.

2) Added to existing request for overlaid grid display option.

5) This SHOULD be visible if you enable Show Other Objects in Editing Modes within Vectorworks Preferences under the Display tab, if not please let me know.

7) Submitting request now.

8 and 9) I will check on this with engineering. I do not know if these are file format limitations or not. But if you have seen other software maintain symbols within the format then it is likely something we could implement as well, I am simply not familiar with it personally.

Besides 1.+3. what you sorted as bugs, nothing new that I hadn't mentioned in the last years

already. But thanks if re-queueing these again.

Fixing 6. would indeed solve a lot of export problems as this Extrude Modul also influences

geometry creation in Stairs, Windows, Doors, Slabs, ...

(Looks like "Solid Additions" and Generic Solids work fine for C4D/FBX)

5. No, all Slab Boundary or Modifiers Modes, unlike Symbols or Group Editing,

work in disabled "enable Show Other Objects in Editing Modes".

Switching by the quick pref Icon doesn't have any effect.

Can't remember VW 2014 anymore but am sure that never worked in VW 2015-2016

8. OK = C4D Problem.

I see it doesn't assign the Original's Layers even when creating Instances directly in C4D.

But maybe there is an option from VW Export to force this (?)

Currently that means, you set your Objects Class to invisible in C4D and your original Object

disappears - but all its Instances stay visible.

9.

FBX is capable of Instances (works in Modo out and back in)

Neither C4D nor VW export Instances by FBX,

VW's C4D Export brings Instances into C4D,

C4D can not import Instances by FBX

Thanks a lot !

Some other missed Features in C4D,

needed from a VW exchange view, to get full VW feeling in C4D :

(If there is any influence in this direction too)

- Layers (VW Classes) should be sorted alphabetically

(or overwritten when changed in VW, as Layers names get "locked" after been rearranged manually)

- You should be able to assign a Material to a Layer like VW Class, to all members of that Layer.

NOT SOLVED !

 

7. C4D/FBX
Invisible Layers will not get exported. No option to export whole file.
NOT SOLVED - Export Class/Layer Settings needed, like a Viewports has.

 

8. C4D
Symbol Instances do not have assigned the Symbols (any) Class. 
No Visibility control possible.
Problem by Maxon C4D, low priority

 

9. FBX
No Instancing of Symbols supported, although FBX supports instances.
Exports as normal geometry, but unfortunately packs all these elements into a
Null Object / Locator Object which makes things meaningless complex and
hard to edit.
Pity but low priority

 

10. C4D/FBX
No Option to Export all Classes elements in one Mesh Item or at least put in a Group.
