Bas Vellekoop
Hi, I'm trying to unfold a metal part/nurbs surface, but the result is not what it should be. Anybody an idea what's going wrong? Edited June 25, 2015 by Buzz Lightyear Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted June 25, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) Same results here. If I untrim the surface/surfaces (this isnt useful, I was just testing) and then Unfold, it creates the expected geometry, so I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that the surfaces are trimmed. Of course this untrimmed geometry isnt the intended result, I was just poking at it to see if anything changed the resulting unfolded surfaces. I tried bisecting the original 3D solid a number of different ways before extracting its surfaces, I still end up with that odd teardrop/leaf shape, it doesn't seem to be caused by either of the two ends or the flanges off to the sides either. Submitting as a bug now. Edited June 25, 2015 by JimW Quote Link to comment
Bas Vellekoop
Thanks for checking and submitting! Made a kind of similar kind of object and unfolded that, then it was not a problem. If somebody knows a quick solution so i can extract the surfaces and unfold them... Otherwise i have to recreate everything and thats a bit of a hassle.. Quote Link to comment
Kevin McAllister
Rhino unwraps it fine. The result is attached, added on a new layer. KM Quote Link to comment

Bas Vellekoop
Ok so I did some further testing. If I 'remove' the fillets from the object and then subtract the faces and unfold them everything is working fine. Quote Link to comment

Kevin McAllister
It may be related to the fillets within the geometry but its not because its a fillet object. When I experimented with it I tried a couple of times with a version converted to generic solid. KM Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee PVA - Admin Posted June 26, 2015 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted June 26, 2015 Same, I also tried filleting some other irregular shapes and they were able to be unfolded just fine, filleted or no. Buzz, could you give me a run down of how this object was made, by the way? It may help them find the cause. Quote Link to comment
Bas Vellekoop
I will send an email to you where you can see it step by step. Its not the same object, but precisely the same workflow. Quote Link to comment
Bas Vellekoop
If the radius of the fillet at the bottom is smaller then 40, lets say 35, then the unfold works fine. Maybe the problem is that fillet goes over the 'corner' of the object / goes over a surface that isn't flat? Quote Link to comment
