Bob Holtzmann
I see two forces at work in this discussion. One is the open standard approach, in users can use the software they like, and exchange files through interoperability. And the other is the single platform approach, in which software vendors and loyalists complain that interoperability does not work, and the only way to go is to have closed proprietary file standards. Christiaan
Paul Morrell (UK Gov Chief Construction Advisor) made same good comments in a BD webinar today: https://presentations.inxpo.com/Shows/UBM/Standalone/BuildingDesign/July13/registration.html (you need to register first before clicking on 'enter event' in top left) Basically it was along the lines of that there will always be some organisations that want to vertically integrate because of their business model, but that they take risks in doing so because they rule people out of their supply chain who might otherwise be better for the job.... "so you have to welcome the openness, because if at any point if we started building things on the assumption that there's a particular piece of software that will do the job and others that won't, we're done for. You know.. we kill the software market, we kill innovation beyond whatever point we're at when make our choices and so on." Quote Link to comment
