Bruce Truax
I know that working in 2D it is possible to snap between objects in different layers. This does not appear to be possible in 3D even if the layers are all the same scale and they are aligned. What is the recommended method for aligning objects in different layers. Jonathan Pickup
it there a reason why you are using different layers? Why not put all the objects on the same layer but assign them to different classes? Classes would also give you the opportunity to assign textures to the objects as well.... If you don't want to use classes then make sure that the layers have the same scale and the same view orientation. Set your layer options to Show Snap Others... Quote Link to comment
Bruce Truax
Using classes is another option but the designer who is doing this decided to put different components (mechanical CAD) for a telescope design on different layers. He now wants to align them to each other. All of the layers do have the same scale and same view orientation (using Align Layer Views) but in any view other than Plan it is not possible to snap to 3D objects in other layers. The temporary work around is to place a 3D locus on the snap position on the reference object and then copy this locus and paste it in place on the working layer. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
i would strongly advise to change the object into different classes on the same layer. I have is hide selected class tool to turn off the class of an object if that is any help... Quote Link to comment
mike m oz
Heed Jonathon's advice - he is dead right in this instance. You will find life a lot easier if you treat VectorWorks classes as being equivalent to AutoCAD layers. If you use classes for your different objects and have all of the information in one 3D layer you will be able to do what you want. Put all of your 2D information in a separate layer and you can cover all of your needs very simply by choosing what layers and classes to have visible when. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Andrew Bell@NV Posted November 29, 2004 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 29, 2004 You could create a layer link to the other layer. The layer link should allow you to do all the alignment you need. Quote Link to comment
