Davis Design
Hi, I was wondering what the best method would be to export a 3d model of a house out of vectorworks to sketchup. We need to do some quick shadow studies for a house and its neighbors and sketchup works well for this. thanks in advance. Quote Link to comment
Petri
RenderWorks does not work for you? Not that I'd be exactly familiar RW. I used to do these in Artlantis beacuse VW & RW didn't deliver. Obviously this "artistic" (deleted.to.avoid.the.wrath.of.moral.rearmament.but.hallelujah.to.you.sister.anyway.pity.about.freedom.of.expression) has been the focus, so that we could get really tasteless, unartistic and useless renderings done. Davis Design
not sure what you are talking about but I want to use my model in sketchup because it is much easier to quickly model the neighboring houses for a shadow study as well as possibly using the google earth feature. G_Hannigan
Can't you just export from VW as 3ds or dwg & import into Sketchup? Quote Link to comment
Guest
You can export a model in VW to use with google early. The Export KML option allows this. You can also add the other models using a massing model, then do the shadow study. All right from within VW. If you really want to use SketchUp, exporting to a DWG is the only option. It's likely the info will be limited when importing the DWG into SketchUp. Quote Link to comment

PeterT
We have limited experience bringing VW models into Sketchup 5 on a Mac. What has worked for us is to Export the model to DWG in Vectorworks 11.5. We choose DWG V. 2000 for the export. Be sure the model is in top view when you export it. In SketchUp we open a new file and choose Import, and set the Format to AutoCAD(*.dwg*.dwf). Next to the Format pulldown, we click the "Options" button and check the boxes for " Merge coplaner faces" and "Orient faces consistently". Navigate to the DWG file and click "Import". If your SketchUp file is defaulted to plan view, the model should come in to SketchUp right on axis. We have not tried this yet in VW 12.5 or SketchUp 6. Good luck. Quote Link to comment
David Hogan
Has anyone got the SketchUp IMPORT function to work in VW 12.5x? I've reinstalled it a couple of times, and nothing happens when I run it. Windows version. Quote Link to comment
