While this can be useful in the very early stages of a project (eg: steep or highly constrained site, etc) it is not my first choice. I would prefer to design from the inside-out (form follows function...). More than once I have been embarassed because the pretty picture I showed the clients either just couldn't be built, or would have required some serious floor plan sacrifices....
